OK. I am a guy who bought the book, How Women Rise. Let me share some background, before I attempt to share the immense value of this resource.Sally Helgesen’s book, The Female Advantage, was read in 1996, my first year as an entrepreneurial organizational development specialist. I had not read many, if any leadership books penned by women in the ten years that preceded Sally’s book, and the title intrigued me. I read Marshall’s book, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, in 2007; it was so good that I purchased Triggers shortly after it was published. That book helped me significantly with changing a number of interpersonal behaviors, which I still have to monitor.Leadership, the development of individuals and teams toward their perpetual effectiveness and performance potentials, is obviously not a one-gender issue. Most large organizations in the 1960s through 1980s thought so, as the management teams were predominantly male-oriented. As a soft-skills, content developer and classroom facilitator/trainer, I wanted to utilize every possible concept, resource, and idea that would resonate with learners and empower them to help their direct reports become confident, self-motivated, task-effective performers.I would say that How Women Rise is a solidly reliable resource for helping others, not just women, identify, then deal with the habits/default behaviors that might currently be holding them back. The book is VERY interesting!! While I chose to read the book sequentially, another reader might choose to review the twelve habits that block effectiveness, then investigate the few habit-chapters that seem to be most like them.The case study examples given in the book are specific, concise, and illustrate how the individuals are initially and negatively impacted by their then current blind spots. The individuals share how their less-than-effective performances impacted their relationships with their bosses and show how they eventually chose to respond more effectively to overcome those situations and significantly improve those relationships, gaining confidence and performance-momentum in the process.Before I typed this line, I went back into the book and read habit 11, Ruminating. Ruminators live in the past, and they are the predominant Kierseyian temperament (SJ) in organizations. They dwell on the past, trying to mentally improve what (or who) went wrong. The authors do an noteworthy job of explaining how rumination is a waste of time and energy, and they offer solid suggestions for helping move beyond it! The same holds true for each of the other eleven habit-chapters.This book would seem appropriate for use in undergraduate programs of all types. Why not identify and address habits that are probably already at work, as one approaches his or her studies, life, etc.?Finally, personality type theory suggests that Thinkers make their decisions objectively, based upon logic, facts, and truth, while Feelers make their decisions subjectively, based upon values and impact upon people. Two-thirds of the men are Thinkers, and one-third are Feelers. Two-thirds of the women are Feelers, and one-third are Thinkers. I am one of those men who makes feelings-base decisions.So, we have women who think like a man, and we have men who feel/make decisions like a woman. This may at least one reason why How Women Rise resonated with me. Kudos to Sally and Marshall for their most productive effort; it certainly fills a void that has been sorely needed!Bill Parker

Fluidly written and easy to read, it’s also easy to find oneself in the pages of How Women Rise. I was hooked from the title of Part I—On Being Stuck. I want to avoid being stuck about as much as anything I can think of, and it’s my goal in coaching others—to learn how to avoid being stuck and to move from stuck to un-stuck if necessary. Much of the leadership literature is still aimed at improving the behaviors and increasing the success of a largely male audience; Helgesen and Goldsmith have synthesized years of leadership coaching experience to write a primer for women, identifying the forms of self-sabotage that women are particularly prone to engage in and offering practical advice, easily implemented, on how to overcome our success-inhibiting habits. How Women Rise helped me identify some hindering baggage that may be holding me back, and offered strategies for substituting more constructive behaviors instead. Straight forward and valuable.

While I think the specific 12 habits can easily apply to all women in all professions, I found the book largely inaccessible because it frames everything in the context of high powered corporate executives. If you work in a trade or do hands on work in a STEM field, you're going to have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to apply the 12 habits to your situation. While the habits themselves are fairly straightforward like using minimizing language or failure to promote yourself, the solutions aren't all that kosher. Almost all of the counter-behaviors amount to "it's a man's world, so you need to act more like the obnoxious male coworker you can't stand" and I don't find that satisfactory.For example, the counter-behavior for habit #3 "overvaluing expertise" is to be that guy who half-a**es his job while constantly tooting his own horn. It's repeated several times throughout the book that if you're too good at your job, nobody will ever want to promote you, therefore you shouldn't try too hard. While that may work for people trying to rise within a corporation where it doesn't actually matter if you know what you're doing as long as you're a good talker, it's downright awful advice for, say, a pilot or a surgeon. I'm a little stunned that a guide to navigate a sphere largely controlled by men totally failed to provide support for women whose career goals don't involve being chained to a desk in a stupid skirt suit.

This is SUCH a worthy message--particularly for women, but surprisingly so for men as well.If you're female, you'll find clear coaching on powerful self-management that positions you to advance in your career. The guidelines focus you on behaviors that are fully under your control, with a focus on 12 key habits women need to guard against in the work environment. How Women Rise spells out subtle but potent tendencies that women display which work to their disadvantage. You need to be aware of these inclinations, yet typically they go undetected. Sally and Marshall bring them to the forefront of your consciousness and position you to shift toward far more effective behaviors.Men, you need to read this book too, because it will make you much more aware of female talent that is underappreciated and underutilized in your organization. In short, How Women Rise will alert you to how you can better manage and capitalize on the female resources that surround you.

Overall I bought this book because I heard someone mention it when they went to a Con. This book was done very cleanly the pictures and layout is good. I imagine it would have been nice if some of the characters were labeled, I imagine though they avoided this for copyright issues. Overall I would buy another one if they had a new edition in a year or two.

I gave this book as a graduation gift to my players when it was first published. Its story and message have stood the test of time, and so it was given as a graduation present again to current players ...22 years later! Early on, it was one of the few books to follow a high school level girls' team as it pursued excellence and a state championship. The bonus for me: the epilogue included a follow-up of the players on that team.

As a former sportswriter and the father of a 10-year-old girl player, this is as good as it gets at capturing the essense of the sports experience from many angles. It's a story about women from a woman's perspective -- not a man's. The difference is what makes this a unique and insightful read. I bought it for my daughter, but I ended up reading it first. It's a "Hoosiers" story set in the 90s that is about girls, not boys. These are characters you care about -- and the fact that they're real makes it even better. Enjoy!

One of the best sports book I have ever read. Right up there with "Friday Night Lights" and "The Miracle of St. Anthony's." Beautifully written, it is a fascinating insight into a town and its people. Most importantly, it is a brilliant and heartwarming story of the importance of sports and friendship for girls. It is impossible not to love this book. I'm amazed that it hasn't been made into a movie yet.

Great story and beautiful words. Highly recommended for anyone looking for inspiration, or even just good storytelling.

Incredible, inspiring story. We've given away many copies.

This book is filled with the most mundane details about each girl on the team, the town and people of Amherst and surrounding towns, local history, Emily Dickinson, the evolution of women's sports, etc., but it provides very little text about basketball itself. It devotes only a few pages in the whole book to describing anything that actually occurred during a basketball game. I read it with my 13 year old daughter, who is developing an interest in basketball, and it was a bit tedious for us both.

This biography is written by Wharton's son-in-law who has spent 40 plus years observing and accumulating information about the life of his father-in law. The text of the book is enhanced by photos of Wharton's artistic work from drawing to painting to sculpture to furniture. Not just a coffee table book to be casually looked at, it is a life enriching reading experience about a pioneering artist.One caution, the book will inspire you to visit the Wharton Esherick Museum. For me it was only a 3 hour drive and a wonderful experience.

His son son in law did a great job in giving background information and guiding through Wharton's exceptional work - just love looking at the photos alone, only feeling the woodwork for yourself at the little but wonderful museum is better. I must admit I don't understand the complaints about the print, to me it's perfect.

A handsome book with a lot of pictures and text too. Fora furniture maker Esherick is a tremendous inspirationand I noted that there isn't a terrific variety of photographson the internet. Once I saw pictures of his furniture piecesI wanted to see it all... took me awhile to get around tobuying the book. Very much worth the investment, imo.

This book is a must have for those woodworker, furniture makers/designers and sculptors. Wharton Esherick is one of the most influential and yet little known artists in the 20th century.The book is very well written and the photographs leave little unstated. As a furniture designer/maker, I knew of Wharton and his work, yet I did not know the man, this book reveals the essential artist.Through this book my awareness and influence by Wharton has increased ten fold... I recommend this book for the pure pleasure of being made aware of a great American artist.

I had the good fortune to visit The WE Studio/Museum in 1972. I was visiting with the daughter of one of his patrons/customers, who is pictured in the book playing chess with WE. The photographic study of Esherick's work in this book is outstanding. Typically, this type book becomes a "coffee table" picture book, but it is the story and life of this artist that is really so inspiring. It's a page turner! I cannot recommend this book strongly enough to anyone who has an interest in the arts, or who simply wants to put two pieces of wood together. Visit the studio if you possibly can. It is wonderful!

I have been to this museum and loved it. This book is an excellent documentation of the glorious work of a master craftsman...truly an inspiration for artists pursuing any art form, but especially the wood artist.

Bought for use as a reference -- one must assume that it is not possible to completely understand the meaning of these writings unless you are fluent in Arabic and have years of exposure to the social structures involved. So it is necessary to accept the authenticity of the translator's English.

This bilingual edition of the Qur'an is just what I was hoping it would be,well-translated and a ready reference when needed in my work on comparative religions and sacred texts..

The translation is quite accurate and easy to read- not the usual old English style of translation that gets confusing and makes you feel lost. It doesn't have many footnotes, so if you are looking for a more detailed translation that gives a background to why the verses were revealed, then this isn't the translation for you.

One of my greatest passions is comparative religion. I've been looking for a translation of the Quran for a long time. The only version I ever owned was a 1956 paperback version: "The Meaning of the Glorious Koran," by Marmaduke Pickthall. I skipped around in it but could never quite get ingrossed in it. One day I was at a bookstore and found this translation and interpretation by Majid Fkahry. It was so clear and easy to read that I bought it immediately.It's a large book in actual size, but it averages only about 250 words per page. And the Quran is a very short book. So don't be misled by the number of pages. It's a fairly quick read. The reason there are so few words on such large pages is because each page is split down the middle, with English text on one side and the original Arabic on the other. I'll probably never have any use for the Arabic text, but the format feels very open because there's such a small portion of English text on each page. In other words, because the text isn't very dense, reading it doesn't seem to be a chore.Fakhry includes a brief and very helpful four page introduction before the text. And throughout the book he includes footnotes to help Westerners understand context they might not otherwise grasp. But the footnotes are mercifully brief and aid rather than interrupt the flow of reading. Clarity and ease of reading are the two best words to describe it. Why did I decide to read the Quran in the first place? Simple. Often the problems caused by religious followers comes from *interpretations* of scripture rather than the scripture itself. I just thought it was high time for me to look at the Quran with my own eyes and not rely on someone else's interpretation of it.Of course, translations of dead languages become interpretations whether they intend to or not. And the author of this version doesn't deny that it's an interpretation. The author also enlisted the aid of translator Mahmud Zayid. Between them they attempted to correct errors of the earlier and more well-known versions, including Pickthall's version. They also consulted the most authoritative commentaries and they tried their best to render the words into clear and readable English. I think they succeeded on that front.It's probably not possible to render a perfect translation of the Quran. Ancient Arabic is a highly idiosyncratic language. Not even modern day Arabs speak the Arabic of Muhammad's day. Some scholars of Islam think that some of the meanings of the Quran have been distorted because of this. They could be right. But this version is pretty much the mainstream interpretation. In other words, even the various disagreeing sects of Islam would probably mostly agree on this interpretation, because despite their deep divisions there are many things they agree on.The first Surah (chapter) is relatively short: only 65 words long. In the second Surah I found words that are eerily similar to words Jesus spoke----a message that some Muslims fail to heed, just as some Christians fail to heed Jesus' similar message. From Surah 2:"There are some who say 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day;' but they are not real believers. They seek to deceive Allah and the believers, but they deceive none others but themselves, though they are not aware of that . . . A painful punishment awaits them because of their lying. And when they are told 'Do not sow mischief in the land' they say: 'We are only doing good.' It is they who make mischief, but they are unaware of that."The words go on to say that such people are "fools" and "devils" and describes them as "intransigent." Intransigence is defined by Merriam-Webster as "characterized by refusal to compromise or abandon an extreme position or attitude." Terrorists seem not to have read that Surah. Notice the similarity of that Surah with Jesus' words:"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that last day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' (Matthew 7:20-23)Jesus also said: "By their fruit ye shall know them." (Matthew 7:16)The similarity between both messages is striking. What's more striking is that the message is delivered so early in the Quran: on the first page, in fact. Both messages say that there are people who consider themselves to be devout and doing God's work but who are deceiving themselves and committing evils instead.I may never completely settle the issue in my own mind of the exact nature of Muhammad as a religious figure. But there is undeniable wisdom within the pages of the Quran. Only a fool could miss it. It seems primarily a message of peace, mercy, compassion, and understanding. There are other parts that don't give me as much comfort, though, because they could be construed as justifying various social codes that I consider too extreme. But there are other passages that moderate those kinds of phrases by supplying a more compassionate perspective. For example, Westerners are familiar with the fact that criminals are punished harshly in Islamic cultures. But in the Quran is says that criminals who show honest remorse should be shown mercy. It's also important to remember that the Quran was written within a cultural context. And the pre-Islamic social rules of Arabs tended to be even more harsh than the post-Islamic social rules of Arabs. So it seems more likely that Muhammad was trying to moderate extreme cultural norms rather than exacerbate or justify them.My uneducated guess, though, is that the Quran may have been altered or misinterpreted somewhere along the line, changing it into something it was never intended to be. Of course, Islamic scholars deny this. And even if if there was some conspiracy to alter the words of the Quran, it would have had to have been very close to the time of Muhammad's death, because there's not much historical evidence of it, if any. But meaning and interpretation could have been altered either intentionally or unintentionally.Ultimately I see no resemblance between the author of these scriptures and modern day terrorists. If they truly believe in God's Day of Judgement, then a close reading of the Quran should fill them with fear and dread because of their actions, not great expectations. That's my opinion.Considering the impact that Islamists have had on Western society in the 20th and 21st centuries, I think Westerners owe it to themselves to read the Quran and learn some the history of Muhammad and Islam. The good parts were very good and have been glossed over. The Quran is relatively short----not nearly the length of even the New Testament. And this translation and interpretation makes it an easy read.

Lo leí a los 20 años y me gustó. Ahora, despues de 35 años, casada con un Mexicano, entendí mucho más. Porque en la familia de mi esposo hay fantasmas, tesoro enterrado, santos, revolucionarios y todos los detailles sabrosos que incluye Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Mi profesor decía que lo que Don Quixote de la Mancha es para la cultura española, 100 años es para la cultura latina. Para mi, 100 años tiene la mejor terminación de cualquier libro que he leido. Que lo disfruten!

If there were more stars, I would give this book more. Garcia Marquez's writing is just exquisite -- just study the opening paragraphs of this book.He captures the atmosphere of this Caribbean part of Colombia masterfully using his magic realism style. It did help that I have a wonderful Spanish teacher who explained the connections and allusions to me. A visit to the region only intensified my love for this novel. I have a hard time though deciding whether I like Cien Años better or Love in the Times of Cholera. they are my two favorite books and I have read both several times in Spanish and English. It's even better in Spanish.

Me encanta! Fue un poco dificil al principio de seguir los personajes con el mismo nombre pero sobre todo es muy interesante como la novela se desarrolla, me gusta la creatividad y estilo de Garcia Marquez y es chistoso, comedia latina. Aun no acabo de leer toda la novela pero quiero commentar que la recomiendo mucho. Me recuerdo de todos mis viajes a sudamerica mientras leo la historia de cien anos de soledad. El libro me lleva ahi y Garcia Marquez pinta una imagen muy clara de la cultura de america latina. Es de veras el Don Quijote de Sudamerica! :D

I was wondering how would have been to read this book in the original language. It has been tough but indeed worth it to read.Marquez crate a chain of events that make the reader willing to read a little more so that you don't feel the pages flow under your fingers but it makes you feel the story like we were watching a movie printed on pages.Even without knowing all of the immense numbers of adjectives (Spanish is not my first language) which enrich every single pages, Marquez style of writing makes you understand anyway the profound essence of his sentences.The author dedicate profound description even to the characters that don't play a main role, making them part of the whole picture, without whom it would not look so great.Pages are pregnant of symbolisms and hidden meanings. Colors, characters, animals, objects are there for a reason, not just as embellishment.This is a remarkable master piece, as few in the modern literature. Make your self a favor and read it.

PLEASE NOTE I'M REVIEWING THE KINDLE FORMAT OF THE BOOK, NOT THE BOOK ITSELF.I'm currently at 68% through the book, and though I love the story, the Kindle format falls really short. The main issue is that the index has just the following entries:Cubierta (Cover)Cien años de soledad (the book's contents)Biografía (Biography)Créditos (Credits)This means that the whole book itself is one single entry, plus there's no title to indicate the start of chapter, just a big blank space between chapters. This is really annoying, specially if you forward the book by mistake, unless you remember the location where you were, you basically have to turn pages until you get there. Definitely a lot of room for improvement in this area.--------------------------------POR FAVOR NOTE QUE MI CRÍTICA ES SOBRE EL FORMATO KINDLE DEL LIBRO, NO EL LIBRO EN SÍ.Actualmente estoy en el 68% del libro, y aunque me encanta la historia, el formato Kindle de verdad se queda corto. Maravillosa. No soy experta en literatura. Solo se que me gusta leer y lo que me gusta me gusta. Una obra muy poética, sobre una familia única. No me imagino entrando a esa casa tan sucia y desordenada, pero creo entender la metáfora.

Sus sueños, amores, fantasias, incestos, miedos, son descritos por la magnifica pluma del autor.Los personajes son bien logrados, asi como el desarrollo de la historia en si, escrita en una magnifica prosa..Son tantos los personajes y sus nombres tan parecidos que es recomendable tener el arbol genealogico de la familia Buendia, para poder ubicarte y asimilar mejor la novela.
