The first thing that drew me to ‘If I Was Your Girl’ was the amazing cover art; and the second was when I found out it was a contemporary with a transgender protagonist. I’ve read a few other titles similar and enjoyed the concepts of identity and social anxiety – they make compelling stories.I found Amanda, our protagonist, to be strong but a little naive and a somewhat whiny - but it worked for her age and to set up her hearts desires. It was easy to relate to the fear and anxiety Amanda goes through and how it is always there, as it would be with anyone hiding a big secret. The treatment of questions about her old name, body parts and surgeries, and how they should never be asked just made sense. It’s intimate and personal and is passive-aggressive, if not a form of bullying to ask if you do not have a close relationship. But it is always one of the first questions out of people's mouths when they discover someone is transgender. It actually taught me some deportment in handling this issue, and for that I am thankful. The last thing I want to do is come across as rude and mean in the face of someone who is going through a difficult journey. In comparison to the other novels I’ve read tackling transgender issues, ‘If I Was Your Girl’ is the most realistic representation I've read of a trans character to date – with a focus more on the person and their relationships instead of Gender Identity and using it as a plot reveal.Amanda’s love interest, Grant was a bit of a larrikin. Your typical boy, but with a worldly compassion shaped from his experiences. It was nice to read something that was positive, strong and kinda cute. It brought issues into a real world landscape and gave the characters a chance to react organically. The violence described in this book that Amanda lived through felt a bit much. I understand it is a real issue for transgender teens, but for me personally, was confronting and didn’t add much to the story. Although, its educating readers to real world fears people like Amanda face – it makes a blunt, horrific point which I find disgusting and devastating.I didn't like the flashbacks interspersed throughout the story so much. I much prefer the narrative style to discover the past through one poignant moment, or through conversation. Frequent time jumping always pulls me from the story.I had issue with a few things - but after reading the Author's Note, feel they are less important now. Many things were written in a way about Amanda and her circumstances to make ‘If I Was Your Girl’ easy and relatable, losing some realism. But still, I would have liked some more realistic characters and reactions.A great book about a girl’s emotional journey into adulthood.Overall, this was a heart-warming contemporary. The storyline itself felt a little simple. But the character development was great. Pleasant writing style, not heavy with the feels, but enough to hit you with what is important. I read the entire book in a day. Pacing is great, I put the book down once for a short rest. One little factoid I read somewhere is that the cover model is a transgender teen, which I felt added another dynamic to the novel. I was really impressed with Meredith Russo’s writing and look forward to see what she produces next.

I write very few reviews, but I am a trans woman and feel a commitment to comment on this well done book. This is not a great work of literature a la Hemingway or Pynchon, but the writing is nonetheless very good. The story line, if stripped to its bones and with a conventional heroine, would be a very nice YA romance with twists. My own life experience, however, made me cry, literally, at all the heartaches and insults that Amanda endured, I know them too well. Yeah, the ending was schmaltz befitting a YA romance, but I don't begrudge it for a minute. If Ms Russo can attract YA readers I would personally canonize her, if it was possible. I would canonize her because I can testify that the slights, the insults, the bullying described so well by Ms, Russo are a matter of fact. The happy ending, as bittersweet as it was, is only possible for some of us. I'm one and I hope Ms. Russo is, also.Thank you, Meredith.Lordes

I love good YA. I love books that remind you so vividly what it was like to be a teenager. This book does that while also bringing you inside what it would be like to be a trans teenager. The topics that get thrown around as political fodder are made human, identifiable, emotional through the experiences of Amanda. I would be amazed any author could achieve this but I have followed Meredith Russo on Twitter for months now and I think she is incredibly smart and talented (and really funny - you should follow her). I cried (and cried - I think if I sat for a minute and thought about it I might cry again) because Amanda and her story are amazing but I cried hardest reading the author's note because unlike some tear jerkers the pain Amanda faces likely pales in comparison to what actual trans men and women face. And that is the power of a book written by an "own voice" I think. You should go buy this book, a box of tissues, clear a long afternoon and read it straight through.

I am not sure my review will be published as it is very inflammatory. But I hope Mr. Eggers will read it. He has done a brilliant job describing the horrific bigotry and discrimination still rampant in much of the South. And FEMA representatives found a willing partner in them after Katrina.Eggers describes the city perfectly ! The Napoleon St. Charles corner is so famous as the parade routes routinely turn toward the Garden District there. And it is only blocks from Memorial Hospital, where many patients were "euthanized" shortly before they could have been rescued (this is not an indictment against the staff. I don't know what I would have done were I in their shoes). Eggers refers to this incident, and to the nursing home in the Ninth Ward whose owners left via roof top and were criticized for abandoning their residents. Again, no aspersions here. But I was shocked by the prison so rapidly assembled by Angola convicts for FEMA/New Orleans. None of my friends who lived in NOLA whenI did, and left for similar reasons, knew of this totally degrading place. But now, because of Eggers, they will ! I only pray that this book will help prevent this type of barbarism IN OUR COUNTRY in the future.Anti- Muslim ? Read about this brave, proud man who remained in America despite the horrific torture and humiliation imposed on him.I strongly recommend James Lee Burkes "Tin Roof Blowdown " after you read this book. All of Burke's New Orleans books are fantastic, but thus one is about Katrina. The real nitty gritty street scene. But Burke didn't write about Camp Greyhound. How did Eggers find out about Zeitune and the Camp ?

I give it 3 stars because it was a well written book. It was our book club selection and itt kept our attention throughout. The image of Zeitoun was one of a caring man who went beyond to give assistance to those most affected by the hurricane. His devotion to the stranded dogs was amazing. This is the character we all came to admire. We became involved in his life and the secondary characters as well. But then.......it was discovered that his actual persona was not in keeping with his written one. It turns out that he is far from the caring and admirable person portrayed in the book. That may be one part of him but there's another side that is far different. Once we had this information our feelings about him changed completely. As a group we were disappointed and felt like we had been deceived by the book's portrayal. It cast a pall over any further discussion of the book.

This book is outside of my usual reading list; however I'm so glad I picked up this book. It is an easy read that provides excellent insight into the experience of a 'good American family' who found themselves on the wrong side of the American gov't. Near the end of the book the author provides some insight how the gov't came to it's conclusion's altho as is usual there is zero accountability. Our country's reaction to the tragedy of 911 was driven by fear; I can think of no decision that is made in a state of fear that turns out well.

The most interesting part was about the aftermath of Katrina, and as Hurricane Harvey had just inundated Houston, it was especially timely reading, How Zeitoun was able to get along so well showed his capability. Then, when he is arrested and imprisoned without being allowed to communicate and without being charged, he is helpless. I couldn't believe that it happened in the USA in the 21st century.

In ZEITOUN, David Eggers has written a remarkable true story of one man's struggle to both survive and make a difference in an atmosphere of devastation and official incompetence. In reviewing this book, I'll be struggling against the use of superlatives and glowing adjectives, the bane of those who evaluate the worthiness of another person's writing.Eggers has focused on many aspects of Hurricane Katrina. His probing examination reveals the overwhelming extent of the destruction, personal choices on how to cope with it, the ineptitude and cruelty displayed by officialdom, and individual stories of courage and compassion. The author has obviously connected with the Zeitoun family. Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun, along with their children and many relatives scattered around the world, personify the closeness and love that every family strives for. It was the group effort that overcame an individual's hardship. Distance, cost, or time were not factors in their efforts that ultimately brought the ordeal to a somewhat satisfactory conclusion. Eggers portrays this intimate bond with obvious admiration.Eggers is not so complimentary about the government's handling of its relief efforts. Officials responsible with maintaining order and providing assistance were caught up in the immensity of the disaster. Their confusion eventually gave way to abuse of power, indolence, and a herd mentality that resulted in the total breakdown of what should have been a humanitarian effort. I was outraged by the arrest of Zeitoun and his comrades in the first place and then totally devastated by their subsequent treatment by over officious law enforcement and military personnel. The bullying attitude by law enforcement is a problem that still exists today. The sad part, as recounted in ZEITOUN, is that this idiotic attitude starts at the top and then permeates the entire organization. Who the hell was responsible for this debacle? Has anyone been called to account for it?Abdulrahmin and Kathy's anxiety about keeping in touch with each other, although great during the actual storm, was exacerbated by Abdulrahmin's arrest. Panicky feelings of despair, and hopelessness became unbearable. The after effects of their ordeal seem more influenced by their encounters with law enforcement that by the storm itself. Their resilience is simply amazing, as is their ability to forgive. If this is a trait produced by their devout Muslim religion, then I'm impressed. So I absolutely recommend this book. The writing is outstanding. The experience is mesmerizing. The lessons learned are eye-opening. The characters are unforgettable. Zeitoun (pronounced zay-toon) is a name for the ages.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES
