This book is a summary of selected asteroids of the solar system. Excluding index, its length is 60-1/2 pages. The first 8-1/2 pages are an introduction to the history of asteroid astronomy, and a little asteroid science. The prose shows an emphasis on the astronomers who made the discoveries described, and the origins of the names of the asteroids. The introductory section begins with Kepler in 1596 when he noted a large gap among the planets between Mars and Jupiter, and then the formulation of the Titius–Bode law in the latter half of the 18th century. In 1801 Piazzi discovered the first asteroid, 1 Ceres, and that was followed by a systematic search by a group of German astronomers which resulted in the discovery of the next three known asteroids, 2 Pallas, 3 Juno, and 4 Vesta (credited to Olbers, Harding, and Olbers respectively).Next the conventions adopted for the naming of new asteroids are described. This is followed by a short description of the three orbital parameters pertinent to asteroid orbits (there are six parameters for orbits in total). The three described are the semimajor axis, the orbital eccentricity, and the orbital inclination.Next the types of asteroid orbits are given, which depend on how close and how far from the sun their orbits reach (perihelion and aphelion). These various types of orbits yield the orbit categories familiar to those who have previous study of asteroids: the Amors, the Apollos, the Atens, the Centaurs, the Trojans, and the Main Belt. (those are the major types, there are also the Atiras, the Damocloids, and the Hildas). A brief description of the Kirkwood Gaps is given, and their origins. Following this description of asteroid orbital types comes the geological types which comprise the asteroids' material composition: the stony types, the carbonaceous types, the metallic types, etc.The next section, the asteroid families, probably should have been placed along with the descriptions of the orbital types. This is presented as a list of 15 prominent asteroid families, out of a known total of 76 families. Asteroid families are groups of asteroids which share similar orbits, resulting from prehistoric collisions among larger precursor asteroids. This does not mean that the members of asteroid families fly in formation around the sun; rather, they are distributed fairly evenly throughout their mean orbit. This happens because their orbits are similar enough to make it apparent that they all originated from a common point (the collision of the precursor asteroids), but over the millions of years (and millions of orbits) even the slightest differences in their individual orbital parameters become magnified and produce large spatial separations among the members (not to even mention post-collision gravitational perturbations from the planets and other asteroids, further collisions, and the cumulative effects of solar radiation pressure).Following this is a section on "asteroid collectives". Hamilton does not offer an explicit description of just what a collective is, but describes it as "relationships among named asteroids" based on the names of the astronomers who made the discoveries of the asteroids in the collective, or the names of the astronomers for which they are named. The name of the entire collective takes after the first name (given name) of the astronomer for which the first member of the collective is named. This term collective seems to be one invented by Hamilton himself. The introductory section ends with a small chart giving the spacecraft (robotic explorers) sent thus far to asteroids, their destinations, and years of launch. No info on the instrumentation used to observe the asteroids is given. A small drawing is given showing the relative sizes of the asteroids that have been visited by spacecraft. Finally, a short description is given of known asteroidal moons. Dunham is credited with having discovered the first such moon, with an arrangement of Earth-based telescopes using a stellar occultation technique. This discovery was controversial, and Hamilton describes how soon after this discovery, in a letter to Sky & Telescope magazine, Hamilton himself drew attention to a pair of co-located impact craters in Clearwater Lakes of Canada which could be terrestrial evidence of asteroidal moons. Now I will comment on this introductory section. Since its total length is some 8-1/2 pages, plainly it's quite concise and information-dense. For the novice reader I believe it would be more than a little confusing. A few drawings would have been helpful, particularly some showing the orbital types and their relationships to the planets and one another, Also helpful would be a graph showing the components of the conic section known to mathematics as the ellipse, from which the orbital parameters are derived. Hamilton does include a line showing the configuration of the L1, L2, and L3 Lagrange points using an "ASCII diagram" using dashes and alphanumerics, but a real drawing would have been much more informative. The description of the Kirkwood Gaps should have included an emphasis that these are purely statistical objects, and that there are not actual voids within the Main Belt. The Gaps are statistical in the same sense that we sometimes speak of "heat waves" or "crime waves". They are not physical waves or things, but merely statistical fluctuations in some parameter. Hamilton does give a useful description of the orbits of the Trojan asteroids of Jupiter; these are located at the L4 and L5 Lagrange points. This is all that most other asteroid books say; however, Hamilton goes on to elaborate that the asteroids located here actually orbit around the Lagrange point. Hence, they are not actually flying in formation around the sun, though they inhabit roughly the same region of space. This explains their different orbital parameters. It is also important to note that at Jupiter's distance (5.2 AU from the sun), small differences in inclination make for large distances between asteroids in the Trojans. Another useful observation by the author is that the Jovian Trojans at L4 number around 4000, whereas the Trojans at Jupiter's L5 point number only around 2000. He doesn't offer an astronomical explanation for this large difference, however. Overall, the book's intro is what an experienced reader in asteroid science would like to have: short and to-the-point. But it's too compact to be useful for beginners, except possibly as a springboard for further research. The bulk of the book is a series of paragraphs explaining the asteroids in sequence, starting with 1 Ceres and ending with 2012VP113 (in the Kupier Belt). The very first 25 are included, thereafter Hamilton skips around -- presumably omitting the uninteresting ones or the ones for which little good data are available. All entries give the asteroid's discoverer, the background on its name, and its orbital parameters. Optional info given for some may include its family and/or collective membership, dimensions, albedo, spectral type (material composition, obtained by spectroscopy), its rotational period, its moon(s), surface gravity, escape velocity, density, and orbital resonance. I emphasize that these data are not given for every asteroid listed; most entries include only a few (though the closer and larger asteroids do include more complete data, naturally). These entries are interspersed with photos showing interesting surface features. There is an index by which the reader can find a particular asteroid by its name (listed alphabetically) or by discoverer. Most of the data on the asteroids could have been presented in as a chart, rather than as prose. It would make finding asteroids with interesting parameters faster, as well as probably being easier on the eyes. Perhaps in a future edition...A word on the book's cover: this is a photo of 4 Vesta (courtesy of the Dawn space probe) superimposed over a painting of the Main Belt.I would have awarded five stars but for the minor shortcomings noted above. The essentials of asteroid science are presented; most all these data are available from the web, but for the modest cost of this book it is worth having them in handy print form.

WOW! Kudos to the author for this collection of Iceland photos.I use Kindle App for iPad and usually when I enlarge photos in Kindle books, they get blurred and grainy. This time not. I was able to enlarge them to the size of the screen or bigger and they were still of very good quality. Not sure what the author did differently than others, but it worked well.I visited Iceland some years ago during summer and enjoyed beautiful landscapes, so different from those I have around me. Through the photos I got a bit of that feel back and I am sure I will return to the book a few more times. If you want a detailed Iceland guide, I suggest you look for another book. But if you are like me and you get inspired by beautiful photos and nature, you will enjoy this book very much.

On my Android tablet and laptop, I wasn't able to get it to display over more than half the page, but I'm not positive that this would occur on every device for every user, so I'm not considering that in this review. Nonetheless, please be aware that it could happen. This is a lovely collection of photographs, with especially gorgeous views of the waterfalls and wildlife. I would have appreciated more information about what I was seeing, however. This is definitely a collection of attractive photos from Iceland rather than a photographic guide to Iceland or its many beautiful features.

Beautiful photography.

So beautiful. Just want to pack and go now. This book is also triggering your mind to prepare photo shooting in Iceland

Jack knows I want him to go, but I can see in his eyes that he is sad.“OK, fine. You can come in for a minute,” I say, feeling Bella listening carefully to every word I say, “and then—well, then yes, you can bugger off. I’ve got, like, a whole painting to finish and you know I’m not very sociable when that happens. Only Humphrey can come anywhere near.”Jack laughs. “You spoil that cat.”Then it’s raining again, so we run the last bit, hand in hand, up the hill to my house. We run past a woman with long tangled hair who’s struggling to put up an umbrella, and a man pushing a bike with a toddler on the back. The toddler waves at us and shouts, “I gettin’ wet!”I wave back with my free hand and feel Bella in the other, gripping Jack, trying to use her powers to electrocute him, wishing he would die because he is normal and happy and she doesn’t think that’s fair.Jack is not really normal and happy, but he is, compared with Bella. I love him. Everyone thinks he’s my boyfriend, but he’s not: he’s better than that. We have a thing that works for both of us.I don’t want a real boyfriend. I don’t think I’ll ever want a relationship. My school is a posh girls’ school, but a lot of the sixth-formers live in a world in which they defer absolutely to boys. It’s pathetic and it makes me mad, but I haven’t been brave enough to say anything, because that would draw more unwelcome attention. Actually, if I tried to argue with them, Bella would jump out and smash the nearest simpering handmaiden with the closest fire extinguisher, so it’s probably best that I bite it back.Jack likes the best side of me, which is the only thing he sees. Hanging out with me has helped him in all sorts of ways, and for a while he raised my status so I was not a top-level target. But that didn’t last long, and soon after, the girls at school started on me again. I don’t really know why they do it, except that I’ve always known I don’t fit in. I expect the girls who are mean to me don’t feel they fit in either, and probably they’re using me to make themselves feel better. I don’t know. All I know is that I am not widely liked, and that feels like shit.I’ve never told Jack about the things that happen to me at school. He would only get upset and mad, and nothing would change, apart from him being a little less happy. And I want Jack to be happy. Only Lily, my other best friend, knows what happens, and Lily protects me from it as much as she can. When we burst in, Mum is standing in the hallway, pretending she just happens to be there, holding something in her hands and smiling in smug anticipation.I look at it. “My phone!” I say, and she grins and holds it out to me.“Someone handed it in,” she says. “The police called and I picked it up. It restores your faith, doesn’t it?”Mum is just saying that because it’s a cliché: she doesn’t need her faith restored. She’s not disillusioned or cynical about anything, though she does make sure to keep me as safe as she possibly can at all times, from dangers that don’t actually exist. I take my phone from her and quickly check it; everything’s exactly as it was when I last saw it yesterday morning, just before I lost it in town.I don’t think Mum has looked through it. I hope she hasn’t.Bella is inside my head, clearing her throat, demanding attention. I push her aside.Mum doesn’t look as if she’s had a shocking insight into my school life. She is happy to see us, Jack and me. She lives for us. She stands around in the hall waiting for me to come home because I am her life. It’s weird. Obviously it’s nice, but I do feel bad for her, because her life must be boring. Sometimes I try to imagine my way into her head, and I just can’t. I don’t think she has a dark side at all.She would be so upset if she knew the truth about me. That’s why I can never tell her. Right now Bella is knocking on the inside of my skull, and I need to get away.As soon as we are through the door, Mum clicks all the locks shut behind us. No house is quite as secure as ours. For as long as I can remember, keeping me safe has pretty much been Mum’s career. She is compelled to make sure I am always safe—always, always safe, all the time. It’s almost funny that she relaxes when I’m tucked away in my bedroom, considering the fact that it’s actually the danger zone.Jack is grinning back at her.“How are you, Mrs. Black?” he says in his polite way. “You’re looking lovely.”She loves that. Mum adores Jack. She wants us to get married and give her lots of grandchildren. Again, she has no idea that that can never happen, which is sweet. I say nothing, because Bella is in my head and I can’t talk very well at the moment.“Cookie?” she says. “I’ve just made some. Still warm from the oven.”I’m not going to stop to have a cookie, but I’ll save some for Bella because she might like them later. Unless they’re the spelt-and-sweet-potato ones Mum made last week, too, in which case no one will ever, ever want one.“No, thanks,” I say.“Yes, please,” says Jack at the same time. He’s hoping for the chocolate chip cookies, I know it.While he follows her into the kitchen, I walk straight ahead and go into the bathroom and close the door and lock it and lean against it and try to breathe. I have to get rid of them both. I have to make Jack go home in the next few minutes. My head tightens. Black spots dance across my vision. He is sitting at the table, flirting with Mum. They both do that. I think Jack finds it funny. God only knows what Mum is up to. She grins at him and looks coquettish and reminisces about her youth, and he laughs in all the right places and says the right things back to her. Neither of them particularly cares whether I’m bothered when they do this, and although it’s gross, I just roll my eyes and look away.I hear Mum say the cookies are ginger and sultana. That’s just about acceptable, so I do my best to clear my head. I unlock the bathroom door and try to act normal, taking three cookies and wrapping them in a paper towel.“Sorry, Jack,” I say, and under Mum’s approving eye I walk over and kiss the top of his head. “Got to do some painting. See you tomorrow.”He laughs. “Sure. See you tomorrow, Ells. I won’t hang around.”“You’re welcome to—” Mum starts to say, but I silence her with a glare and leave the room, gasping for breath, taking the stairs twoat a time.I close my bedroom door and try to breathe. My head is ringing so loudly, I wouldn’t be able to hear anything else, not even a fire alarm or a nuclear siren if it went off. Maybe one of those things is happening right now. But I don’t care if it is. I roll up my sleeves and look at the tiny lines on the insides of my arms. I’m ashamed of them. I’m never going to let that happen again. They are so small that only I know they’re there.Be nice, I say to Bella.BE NICE, she replies, imitating me. BE NICE. ALWAYS BE NICE.Oh, please stop.PLEASE STOP. PLEASE STOP. PLEASE STOP.Leave me alone.LEAVE ME ALONE.Leavemealone.LEAVE.I don’t know what is me and what is her.I put my hands to the sides of my face and scream silently like the painting. All I want is to be normal.I draw in a shuddery breath and press the palms of my hands on the carpet, feeling the floor, being here in this moment, myself in my room. One thing I have learned over the years is how to pretend, and when this door is closed, I don’t have to pretend anymore. It can all come out.I pull the pictures out from under the bed. They are meticulous explosions of horror. They are filled with death and maiming and nightmares. Bella drew them, and she likes to look at them. Perhaps I can assuage her with them.I call her Bella because she is the dark side of me. It’s Ella but not. It’s Bad Ella. Bella. I gave her a name a few years ago and that made it a bit better, because before that I called it the Monster. Anything is a tiny bit better when it has a name. Bella is better than the Monster. I didn’t know then that Bella means “beautiful”: my Bella isn’t beautiful at all. She is the opposite. But she’s still Bella.Bella is desperate to own the whole of me: as Ella, I am alert and battling all the time. Sometimes I have to let Bella out before everything explodes. That’s when she draws these pictures. It’s scary, but after that happens, I feel calm and peaceful and, I think, kind of happy. Everything is balanced for a while. I look at the drawings now. They are done in black ink—huge sheets of tiny detail like Hieronymus Bosch, but with modern bits in them. Children are decapitated here. Body parts are everywhere. There is blood and murder. These pictures take us ages and I hope no one ever finds them, but they’re definitely the best art I’ve ever done. But today is different.

The Truth and Lies of Ella Black was no doubt my most anticipated read for winter of 2019. I absolutely LOVED The One Memory of Flora Banks (and I even made Flora Banks inspired cupcakes, which you can check out here!), so I was so excited to read the author's new book. The cover is gorgeous, it sounded just as thrilling and mysterious as Flora Banks, and I knew I was going to fall head over heels in love with it after reading the first few pages.Almost the second the ARC of this book arrived in my mailbox (and a HUGE thank you to Penguin Teen!), I sat down with this book and devoured the entire thing in one day. I started reading it in the morning, and read it all afternoon until it was time for bed. I got so wrapped up in reading this book that reality faded away completely, and when I finished the book, I had a really difficult time getting out of the story and back into my real life. It was just that engrossing.Ella Black is a seventeen-year-old girl who loves her friends and her cat. Her parents have always treated her well, and she has big dreams of traveling and painting the world she sees."Most people don't think to question the basic foundations of their existence. I never did."However, Ella Black harbors a secret: Bella. Bella is the inner voice that sometimes pops out in her head, the one that tells her to do bad things, such as kill a bird with a hammer when her cat brings it through her window. Ella has had some rough times with Bella, but over the course of her life, she has learned how to keep her at bay for the most part, able to control her. She can't always, but she tries. And no one else knows about Bella, not even her parents. So one afternoon when her parents pull her out of school and give her a passport and plane tickets to Rio de Janeiro, putting them all on a flight without packing more than a handful of things, of course Ella gets curious. She has no idea why this is happening: she knows she has always wanted to go to Rio de Janeiro, and her parents have known that, too, but why the rush? So many things go through Ella's head, including her being sick, but nothing could prepare her for the truth."Everything I thought I knew about my life is a lie."While in Rio, Ella manages to get away from her parents for a short time by faking sick, despite the fact that they are keeping a closer watch on her than ever before. It is then that Ella manages to break into the hotel room safe and discover why her parents have really brought her to Brazil, and what this means for her. While at the hotel, she meets a boy that changes her life: she falls in love with him instantly, and nothing will ever be the same for Ella now that she has met him. She sneaks around behind her parents' backs, and swears that whatever she does, she will try to be with him. After a problematic encounter at a cafe causes Bella to break out in Ella's mind, Ella flees the scene and promises that she won't look back. Afraid the police and her parents are after her, she changes not only her name, but her appearance as well, trying to stay as hidden as she possibly can, even if that means living on the streets."Life is short. Weird things can happen. I don't know who I am, and that feels fundamental."When she pieces together the final pieces of the nightmare that has become her life, she learns the real reason her parents sheltered her from the truth for such a long time. Creating a new identiy for herself, she promises to do whatever she can to stay hidden, even if it means lying to the boy she has fallen in love with.If you've read The One Memory of Flora Banks, this book takes on the same style of writing and the main character, Ella Black, will probably seem familiar to you. Not familiar in a bad way or anything, just familiar in how she is written, and how the first person narrative plays out. I liked that. It reminded me enough of the author's first book to make me remember why I love her writing so much, but had enough differences to not feel like it was just a rehash of that book. The writing style was amazingly done. So was the character creation.I did find that Ella's character really changes a lot toward the end of the book for a chapter or two here and there, and it almost kind of reminded me of a different character entirely, because of the way she was thinking and acting. I thought that was a little out of place after getting to know Ella for the whole book, but other than that, I loved this book so much that I honestly couldn't put it down.I've never been to Rio, but I can tell you right now that the way that the author painted the setting that it's somewhere I really would love to visit. It was incredibly beautiful and well done, with just enough attention to detail to make you feel like you were right there alongside Ella.I'm not one for insta-love, but I did like it in this book. I thought it was more or less believable, and I found it to be adorable and simply magical. Ella and Christian, the boy she falls in love with, try their hardest to spend as much time together as they can while they are both in Rio, and when things go wrong for Ella after she discovers the shocking truth her parents were hiding, Christian is the one she calls and tells everything to.If you liked The One Memory of Flora Banks, you will love this book, too. I think it was a well written and exciting novel, and I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing. The secret that Ella's parents were hiding from her was not at all what I was expecting (I actually had my own theory, but it turned out to be WAY wrong, and I was so happy about it!), and the twists that happen in this book are more than enough to make you keep reading until you've turned the very last page.Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

“Cough Cures” is a book that should be on everyone’s bookshelf! At first glance, a reader may be inclined to think that this book will only help with determining treatment for chronic coughs, but that would be an enormous understatement. “Cough Cures” will help readers to understand and self-treat wide-ranging symptoms of the common cold with remedies that may even be found right in your own kitchen. In fact, I may even go so far as to say that taking heed of all of the health and lifestyle recommendations in this book may even prevent or dramatically reduce the incidence of getting sick. The author’s credentials, as both an awarded Medical Doctor in the field of Pulmonology, and a homeopathic practitioner, make this book a trusted source of advice that is written in a way that everyone will understand. Dr. Gus seamlessly bridges the worlds of traditional modern medicine and homeopathic medicine with clear explanations of the benefits and dangers of OTC medications as well as in-depth, research-supported natural remedies that have been proven to work even more effectively than the well-known branded OTCs.The book is a well-organized guidebook for self-treatment of the common cold. I particularly found it helpful to have boxed summaries called “Shortcut Guides” at the end of sections which detailed multiple home-remedies and homeopathic brands available for sale. Other key information is also boxed within the chapters. In another chapter, dedicated to making sense of common OTC medications, I was surprised to learn that of the over 3000 OTC’s on the market, 60% fall into 2 groups,- antihistamines and pain relievers. This chapter includes a useful table to help make sense of the active ingredients in common OTC’s, including brand names, functions, effectiveness, and side effects. The book includes over 20 useful shortcut guides and tables which will be my “go-to” guides from now on.Dr. Gus gives readers a balanced guide to treating coughs and colds by informing them of the best, proven remedies, as well as when seeing a doctor is recommended. This book has earned a spot on my kitchen bookshelf and I know that I will be much better prepared the next time someone in my family gets sick.

As a pre-med student, it is refreshing to read about well researched evidence based cures for the cough and common cold that are not directly tied in with standard medications but rather a more healthy and natural approach that actually work. Not only this but it is incredibly easy to read and breaks all scientific concepts down in a manner that makes it super easy to understand. This book is eye opening for those of us whose instant thought is to make a bee line for over the counter medications and prescription medicines from our doctors. I also loved that it talks about lifestyle choices and goes into preventative care which most people completely disregard and don't realize impacts their health more than anything! There is nothing like feeling empowered with knowledge and choices on how to treat common ailments that both you and your family may suffer from and this book provides just that. Great read, left a true impact on me and I will be sharing it with everyone I know.

This kind of medical book returns balance to health care management...Dr. Gus gives fair credence to grandma's remedies including providing explanations of why many of them work. Simple medicine in a complex healthcare world...a great reference guide for making the best choices in today's over-saturated, over-medicated market. Biggest revelation was early on in the book...the amount of accidental acetaminophen overload that many of us have experienced without even knowing it...not that I want to get a cough, but I almost can't wait so I can use this book to determine what kind it is and how to attack it! A definite must have for your home library!

I am so thankful that I found this book! I so often find myself in the scenario outlined by Dr. Ferrer; roaming the drug store aisle trying to find the right over the counter medicine to treat my symptoms, all the while wondering if an herbal remedy would serve me better. I love that he names reputable herbal supplement brands because in a market filled with imposters it is so hard to choose wisely. Dr. Ferrer approaches the subject matter from the point of view of a husband and a physician using humor and medicine to make this book a must read for everyone!

As founder of the Center for Integrative Therapies in Pharmaceutical Care at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and coordinator of the course, A Survey Of Complementary Alternative Medicine, I had Burke Lennihan as a guest lecturer each year and found her to be a fount of knowledge in natural medicine. Her previous book, Your Natural Medicine Cabinet, has been useful to my doctor of pharmacy students who do a clerkship with me in my naturopathic integrative practice. Cough Cures promises to be an even more useful resource as it reviews over-the-counter medicines and provides extensive research to document its recommendations for natural medicine. Highly recommended for health care professionals and students as well as for home use.

What to do instead of antibiotics? As a primary care physician, there have been plenty of times I've seen a patient frustrated by a cough and desperate for anything to help it go away. Antibiotics are rarely a good answer, but patients understandably want something, especially when it's affecting their quality of life or their children are sick and up half the night. This book offers real solutions for patients and physicians - supplements, herbs, homeopathics, and more, with many research studies cited and safety information which will make physicians feel more confident recommending them. I've had great success with some of the products recommended in this well-written book.

Wow, I never knew acid reflux could cause coughs. This book is chock full of all kinds of information and offers a wide variety of home treatment options. Very readable if you want to dig in or else just skip to the shortcut guides/summary charts. A good reference for this Dr. Mom to keep on hand.
