This volume collects Ultimate Spider-Man issues 8-13. In this volume we finally see Spider-Man clash with the criminal element of New York City properly. Spider-Man encounters Electro, the Enforcers and the Kingpin while still trying to juggle his life as a high schooler. Spider-Man also gets placed in a very compromising situation that could jeopardize his life as a crime fighting vigilante. Bendis handles this very well and very realistically, especially considering the subject matter and when you think about a city as vast and as populated as New York. This issue also contains more touching and heart felt moments between Peter and Aunt May. Peter also begins to pursue his relationship with Mary Jane more in this story arc, although it is very tumultuous as one would expect from a high school romance. This however leads to a very satisfying moment between Peter and Mary Jane in the final issue which is dedicated solely to the two of them. I did enjoy how Bendis ties in some of the things that Peter is learning in school to his crime fighting antics, his history class plays a key role in defeating the Kingpin in this story arc. But I really liked that application as it seems to be something that a smart young crime fighter would do. I also enjoyed the comedy spread throughout this book, it seems that Bendis is settling in more to his run on Spider-Man at this point. I didn’t really like the depiction of Electro in this story arc. He felt largely unnecessary, and he wasn’t as compelling as his mainstream 616 counterpart. Mark Bagley and Art Thibert are still doing well with the artwork, in fact it’s hard to think of Ultimate Spider-Man without this iconic look and feel to the artwork. Overall, this is a solid continuation of Bendis’s run.

- Shocker (as he takes out a police car during a chase): "Hey, I got one!! I got one!!"- Spidey (whilst kicking Shocker's mug in): "I got one, too! Awww, but mine's a big tool!"Having just re-read these two trades back to back, I thought I'd try for a two-fer, double dipping on both ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Vol. 19: DEATH OF A GOBLIN and Vol. 20: ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN & HIS AMAZING FRIENDS. Firstly, I harbor mad friggin' love for this series. With his Ultimate Spidey stories, Brian Michael Bendis has managed to reinvent and reinvigorate the Spider-Man mythos, and shiny-domed dude has even managed to stick with the thing for over 130 issues now. Artist Mark Bagley also gets massive golf claps for his extensive run, and it's no lie that his take on Ultimate Spidey has become THE definitive rendering. Having said that, Stuart Immonen, not exactly a scrub himself, has been doing righteous things with the artwork. I dig that Immonen keeps Spidey looking like a kid in tights, instead of some over-muscly bloke all of a sudden.ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Vol. 19: DEATH OF A GOBLIN collects issues #112-117 and features the escape of Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin, from the Triskelion's maximum security compound and the resultant wigging out of Peter and Mary Jane. As Osborn goes about his machinations to take down Nick Fury (who, following the goings-on in the Ultimate Power mini-series, isn't around much anymore), interim S.H.I.E.L.D. director Carol Danvers tries to catch up with all the crazy going down. And, lest you forget that this is a certain teen wall-crawler's book, you best believe the Goblin's not forgotten Peter Parker.What I probably relish best in the Ultimate Universe is the sense of freshness it invokes. Not only do longtime Marvel characters get a do-over, but there seems to be more immediacy to the stuff that happens to them. And, importantly, while still steeped in outrageous fantasy, Ultimate Universe somehow feels closer to reality than the mainstream 616. Whenever an Ultimate character dies, it feels more permanent. All this leading to me saying that DEATH OF A GOBLIN is one of the best story arcs in this series.Bendis is very good with the superhero stuff, starting off with Spidey and the newly costumed Shadowcat early on taking out the Shocker in what feels like a throwaway sequence. The stakes quickly go up with Osborn's prison breakout because, as long time readers know, Osborn knows Spidey's civilian identity and evil dude's even flung Mary Jane off a bridge. With Pete ensuring that Aunt May and Mary Jane skedaddle the eff out of town, his bump of responsibility makes him stay on.Pete's taken on the Kingpin and Venom and sundry wacky clones, but let's face it, the Goblin has always been Spidey's traditional nemesis. Ultimate Goblin is immeasurably more powerful than Spidey, and more intelligent, and I like that Spidey always has to struggle like epic crapcakes just to eke out a win. Here, it's not even Pete who finally takes the Goblin down.Bendis's gift for funny and insightful dialogue is on display again. Ultimate Spidey, I think, is hands down funnier than 616 Spidey. Bendis balances the colossal fighty fights with very well done character moments, with the Midtown High sequences proving to be enthralling bits. Pete and Kitty are paired up with one of those baby doll monitoring assignments (and, as one panel reveals, Kitty still isn't quite over Pete's break-up with her). I'm also getting a kick out of the school dynamics with specifics to Kitty Pryde's identity being public knowledge. On the Triskelion side, Spidey and Carol Danvers trade in some hilarious banter, the funny mostly coming from Pete's end. Things climax tragically (all you have to do is peek at the title of this trade) and there's a coda which takes place in Pete's classroom, in a moment tinged with poignancy. A great story arc.ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Vol. 20: SPIDER-MAN & HIS AMAZING FRIENDS collects issues #118-122 as, in the wake of the traumatic events in DEATH OF A GOBLIN, Bendis takes it down a notch and focuses on the personal lives of Pete and his circle of pallies. A fun story arc.***SPOILER alert for this next paragraph***Midtown High is still mourning the passing of Harry Osborne. To get out of their funk, Pete and his friends decide to hang out at the beach, accompanied by Johnny Storm (Human Torch) and Bobby Drake (Iceman). Night falls on the beach and the kids are chillin' around a campfire, when, shockingly, dot dot dot...Old fogeys may get that the three-part "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends" is a fond callback to the awesome 1980s cartoon show of the same title (ah, anyone remember Ms.Lion?). So it makes sense that this arc features Iceman (come to apologize to Kitty), as well as the debut of Ultimate Firestar. And, predictably, the manifestation of a new mutant gets a "Hruh?" not only from the X-Men but from Magneto. Bendis effectively serves up his decompression style of storytelling, as these three issues generate tons of cool dialogue, with Spidey and Iceman trying their best to talk down a frantic and frightened Firestar. Not much of a superhero throwdown in this one, which is okay, as I found the conversations among the cast so much more involving. Also, seriously, Peter just ain't competent with keeping his secret identity secret. Seriously.The last two issues in this trade are kinda one-offs. First, we learn how Pete and Kitty fare with their classroom project. It involves an arduous explanation from Peter (to his teacher, in front of the class) as to why their assigned fake baby doesn't exactly end up unscathed. However, when that farfetched explanation features Omega Red and the epic destruction of the Daily Bugle offices, well, someone's G.P.A. is bound to drop.Issue #122 starts off sunnily enough, as Peter video-records Mary Jane as she tries to conduct Man on the Street interviews but can't even say her name right. Things take a deadly serious turn when the Shocker, "the biggest loser in Loserville," surfaces and surprisingly beats holy heck out of and then kidnaps Spider-Man. Which goes to show, even the most ridiculed supervillain is still someone not to be effed with.As these issues demonstrate, there's more gravitas now to young Peter Parker. Wallcrawling guy has fought monumental battles and experienced wondrous things and has incured hurtful losses, but, thru all this, Brian Michael Bendis has been able to preserve the core of Peter Parker, keeping him on point while sustaining that lighthearted flavor. Nothing probably encapsulates this as much as this following bit:- Firestar: "You're an amazing friend. You ran to help me. I won't forget this."- Spidey: "Well, just remember that with great power there must also come great responsibility."- Firestar: "Now you sound like a tool."Hah! And you got her "amazing friend" reference, right?The Ultimate Universe was built on the success of this title, thanks to Bendis's ability to generate pathos and to put a fresh spin on age-old Spider-Man tropes. Ultimate Peter Parker, terrific in all his teenhood and in the infancy of his superhero career, is nowadays my favorite version of the web-spinner. Mark Bagley has put in serious work, as has Stuart Immonen. With Ultimate titles getting shut down left and right and characters getting killed off everywhere (thanks, ULTIMATUM) and with #133 projected as possibly the last Ultimate Spidey issue (#130 is currently what's on sale), I'm just trying to soak it all in, brother. All the while hoping that this doesn't put a moratorium on this little corner of Marvel. That would suck immensely.

I'd like to preface this review by saying that if you have read Volume 1, then you probably know everything I'm going to say, so I'll just say buy this, it's of the same kind and quality.I've known of Ultimate Spider-man's existence for quite some time, but have only recently gotten around to checking it out. If you don't know it's a contemporary reimagining of everyone's favorite wall-crawler, featuring Peter Parker as a teenager in high school, struggling with hormones, interpersonal encounters with peers (especially girls), and the occasional super villain bent on destroying New York.The contemporary retelling is, in my opinion, sublime. There are many cultural allusions, the dialogue is snappy and fun, and the storytelling is as good as any I've read in comic books (admittedly my experience is far from exhaustive).That said, the thing I love most about Ultimate Spider-man is that despite all the changes and updates, the spirit of what makes the web head such an awesome hero is maintained. You'll see that highlighted plain as day in this volume, especially towards the end of the last issue it contains. I generally don't review books, and I don't think I've ever reviewed a comic, but I felt compelled. This comic is amazing, and at the price it's definitely worth it whether you're a long time Spidey fanatic like myself or you are completely uninitiated to the world of comics. If it's the latter, you'd be hard-pressed to find many more accessible starting points. Give it a shot, it will not disappoint.

Though nothing will ever beat the original Stan Lee run of the first 100 or so issues of the Amazing Spider-Man, this is not a bad re-telling of the story of Peter Parker. There are some elements to the ultimate universe I do not like, but I thought the Ultimate Spider-Man run was pretty creative in making an old story seem new. I recommend.

The is the second installment of the "EMP Survivors Series" and I enjoyed it. I wavered on three stars or four, but went with four for a very simple reason: it left me hoping for a third installment. The series needs one because while it somewhat ties up the loose ends of the main characters, it totally declines to tell the reader much of what is going on with the USA, whoever caused the EMP, etc. This is pretty much left alone except for the recitation of some rumors towards the end. Odd. This would be the perfect theme for a third installment.I had some nits with the plot of this one, but I cannot really go into them here because they would constitute spoilers (and I don't do spoilers.)Anyway, I enjoyed the book. RJB.

I was undecided when i finished book 1, if I'd buy book 2. I'm glad that i did. I enjoyed it more than the first.The character consistency was a lot better and the story flowed better for me personally.I admit, i did laugh out loud that there were narrative from the dog, even over detailed gun descriptions like in the first. But i still liked the book overall.I did go ahead and grab an example of one of the many over descriptive gun portions that i said made my eyes glaze over. I still could have done without these and add nothing to the story but overall, i think the author is a good storyteller."An OBR—the Texas answer to the search for the perfect semi-automatic sniper rifle. I'm assuming this book along with the first book are self published and edited. Having said that, great job! This book was entertaining, fast paced, had very good character development and great plot, along with being well written. Being from the pineywoods of East Texas, I could relate to much of what was in the book. The majority of the characters were well developed and well thought out. I bought both the first and second books together and read each one in a day, very absorbing. I will be looking for book three and would recommend to other readers, especially if you enjoy the EMP genre.

The story of the two lawyers caught up in an EMP apocalypse continues. Pike telegraphs some of his story turns but it didn't stop me from enjoying this second volume. The character arch as the two officers of the court work their way through the evaporation of civil order in East Texas is entirely believable. He does not rush their personal relationship but allows it to develop naturally. I especially like and enjoyed his internal dialog in the brain of the family hound. Author Pike has a good understanding of dogs and their mode of thinking.He moves his story right along. I found myself reading his tale quickly so that I could find out what happened next.In the next book he spins off a new tale with a couple of lesser characters on a new journey. Can't wait.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Pike's first two books in his Unbroken World series. Loved his characters and his underlying theme of "faith, family and firearms! Can't wait to read the third book and look forward to more in this series! Congratulations, Mr. Pike!

This is book 2 of the EMP series and follows Dillon and Holly from Louisiana back to Holly's ranch. Dillon is trying to come to grips with what appears to be the certain loss of his daughter. His struggle is real and Chris captures this well in her writing. There are some unexpected twists in this book that set the stage for book 3 of the series. New characters are introduced and, as with book one, are well developed.

I had rated this before but it disappeared. I’ve really enjoyed this series. The gun info is really interesting, and the story line is different from your typical post-apocalyptic storyline. I have stayed up WAY too late reading when I should be in in bed because I have to work! Amazon please do not remove my post. I bought and paid for my book and my favorable review was not solicited.

I absolutely love this series. The characters are so great, the story is totally engrossing...once you start reading you won't want to stop until it's finished. From first page to last there isn't a dull second. I am so looking forward to more from this series. Thanks Chris Pike for your fabulous work that has kept me greatly entertained.

The Mann’s are a multi talented and dynamic couple that’s willing to share their marital experience “the good, the bad and the in between”. They are genuine and after reading their book I honestly feel I know them on a personal level. This book is a must read for couples contemplating marriage as it shares experiences that they’ve learned which strengthened their relationship. They also reference their Faith which includes praying throughout this book. I’m going to share my copy of this book and I recommend it as it’s an easy read and you will gain some helpful information.

I just finished listening to this book (Audible). They were my favorite couple before the book, but I feel more of a connection now more than ever. The love, faith, dedication, family and commitment to one another is beautiful. Keeping God first is the glue that has held them together through the test of times. Their honesty and transparency is absolutely beautiful. This is an in-depth honest and thought provoking book that will help marriages at any stage. Get the book for yourself and I hope it inspires you as much as it has inspired me.

Before there was ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Bladerunner’, before there was even ‘1984’, there was 'Brave New World'. It is astonishing that Aldous Huxley wrote this tale of technological dystopia in 1932. The social elements from the story are similar to those in Orwell and Kafka and others, namely a society of obedient sheep run by the state and benevolent dictators through brainwashing and groupthink. But what’s striking about the novel is how it so astutely anticipates a society taken over by benevolent technocrats rather than politicians, a scenario that appears increasingly likely in the age of AI and genetic engineering. Huxley came from an illustrious scientific family with social connections. His grandfather was Thomas Henry Huxley, Darwin’s close friend, publicist and “bulldog”, whose famous smackdown of Bishop Samuel Wilberforce has been relished by rationalists fighting against religious faith ever since. His brother was Julian Huxley, a famous biologist who among other accomplishments wrote a marvelous tome on everything that was then known about biology with H. G. Wells. Steeped in scientific as well as social discourse, possessing a deep knowledge of medical and other scientific research, Aldous was in an ideal position to write a far-reaching novel.This he duly did. The basic premise of the novel sounds eerily prescient. Sometime in the near future, society has been regimented into a caste system where people are genetically engineered by the state in large state-run reproductive farms. Anticipating ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, only a select few women and men are capable of providing fertile eggs and sperm for this careful social engineering. The higher castes are strong, intelligent and charismatic. The lower castes are turgid, obedient and physically weak. They don’t begrudge those from the upper castes because their genetic engineering has largely removed their propensity toward jealousy and violence. Most notably, because reproduction is now the responsibility of the state, there is no longer a concept of a family, of a father or mother. There is knowledge of these concepts, but it’s regarded as archaic history from a past era and is met with revulsion.How is this population kept under control? Not shockingly at all, through sex, drugs and rock and roll. Promiscuity is encouraged from childhood onwards and is simply a way of life, and everyone sleeps with everyone else, again without feeling jealousy or resentment (it was this depiction of promiscuity that led the book to be banned in India in the 60s). They flood their bodies with a drug called soma whenever they feel any kind of negative emotion welling up inside and party like there’s no end. They are brainwashed into believing the virtues of these and other interventions by the state through subliminal messages played when they are sleeping; such unconscious brainwashing goes all the way back to their birth. People do die, but out of sight, and when they are still looking young and attractive. Death is little more than a nuisance, a slight distraction from youth, beauty and fun.Like Neo from ‘The Matrix’, one particular citizen of this society named Bernard Marx starts feeling that there is more to the world than would be apparent from this state of induced bliss. On a tryst with a particularly attractive member of his caste in an Indian reservation in New Mexico, he comes across a man referred to as the savage. The savage is the product of an illegitimate encounter (back when there were parents) between a member of a lower caste and the Director of Hatcheries who oversees all the controlled reproduction. He has grown up without any of the enlightened instruments of the New World, but his mother has kept a copy of Shakespeare with her so he knows all of Shakespeare by heart and frequently quotes it. Marx brings the savage back to his society. The rest of the book describes the savage’s reaction to this supposed utopia and its ultimately tragic consequences. Ultimately he concludes that it’s better to have free will and feel occasionally unhappy, resentful and angry than live in a society where free will is squelched and the population is kept bathed in an induced state of artificial happiness.The vision of technological control in the novel is sweeping and frighteningly prescient. There is the brainwashing and complacent submission to the status quo that everyone undergoes which is similar to the messages provided in modern times by TV, social media and the 24-hour news cycle. There are the chemical and genetic interventions made by the state right in the embryonic stage to make sure that the embryos grow up with desired physical or mental advantages or deficiencies. These kinds of interventions are the exact kind feared by those wary of CRISPR and other genetic editing technologies. Finally, keeping the population preoccupied, entertained and away from critical thinking through sex and promiscuity is a particularly potent form of societal control that has been appreciated well by Victoria’s Secret, and that will not end with developments in virtual reality.In some sense, Huxley completely anticipates the social problems engendered by the technological takeover of human jobs by robots and AI. Once human beings are left with nothing to do, how does the state ensure that they are prevented from becoming bored and restless and causing all kinds of trouble? In his book “Homo Deus”, Yuval Harari asks the same questions and concludes that a technocratic society will come up with distractions like virtual reality video games, new psychoactive drugs and novel forms of sexual entertainment that will keep the vast majority of unemployed from becoming bored and potentially hostile. I do not know whether Harari read Huxley, but I do feel more frightened by Huxley than by Harari. One reason I feel more frightened is because of what he leaves out; the book was published in 1932, so it omits any discussion of nuclear weapons which were invented ten years later. The combination of nuclear weapons with limitless societal control through technology makes for a particularly combustible mix.The biggest prediction of Huxley’s dystopia, and one distinctly different from that made by Orwell or Kafka, is that instead of a socialist state, people’s minds are much more likely to be controlled in the near future by the leaders of technology companies like Google and Facebook who have formed an unholy nexus with the government. With their social media alerts and Fitbits and maps, the tech companies are increasingly telling us how to live our lives and distracting us from free thinking. Instead of communist regimes like the Soviet Union forcibly trampling on individual choice and liberty, we are already gently but willingly ceding our choices, privacy and liberties to machines and algorithms developed by these companies. And just like the state in Huxley and Orwell’s works, the leaders of these corporations will tell us why it’s in our best interests to let technology control our lives and freedom, when all the while it would really be in their best interests to tell us this. Our capitulation to their inventions will look helpful and voluntary and will feel pleasurable and even noble, but it will be no less complete than the capitulation of every individual in “Brave New World” or “1984”. The only question is, will there be any savages left among us to tell us how foolishly we are behaving?

Do NOT bother with the Kindle version. Specifically the one with the picture of the eggs and blood. There IS a kindle version that is the correct text (with the title in red banner) listed for $10+. But the eggs and blood version is completely different, simplified, dumbed down version of the physical book. The paperback format as pictured on the product page is what I have for my physical copy and they are vastly different. I read the kindle version while at work on my computer during slow periods and then came home and attempted to read the book version where I left off, only to find that chapters didn't line up, there were entire pages of conversation missing towards the end of the book between Mustapha Mond and John, the Savage. ENTIRE. PAGES. Very upsetting to learn this. It shouldn't be on the same product page listed as a kindle version. It's a completely different version.DO NOT PURCHASE THE KINDLE VERSION.

That we are being propelled in the direction of Brave New World is obvious. But not less obvious is the fact that we can, if we so desire, refuse to co-operate with the blind forces that are compelling us. As Mr. William Whyte has shown in his remarkable book, The Organization Man, a new Social Ethic is replacing our traditional ethical system – the system in which the individual is primary. The key words in this Social Ethic are “adjustment,” “adaptation,” “socially oriented behavior,” “belongingness,” “acquisition of social skills,” “team work,” “group living,” “group loyalty,” “group dynamics,” “group thinking,” “group creativity.” Its basic assumption is that the social whole has greater worth and significant than its individual parts, that inborn biological differences should be sacrificed to cultural uniformity, that the rights of the collective take precedence over what the eighteenth century called the Rights of Man.”[1]Furthermore, as Huxley notes, the:“…ideal man is the man who displays “dynamic conformity” (delicious phrase!) and an intense loyalty to the group, an unflagging desire to subordinate himself, to belong.”[2]Talk about a conformity crisis! And it all starts in youth, through the public schooling system.This conformity crisis in public schooling has been spoken about at length by John Taylor Gatto in his books, Dumbing Us Down, A Different Kind Of Teacher and Weapons Of Mass Instruction.In Dumbing Us Down – The Hidden Curriculum Of Compulsory Schooling, Gatto mentions the following explosive remarks:“Mass education cannot work to produce a fair society because its daily practice is practice in rigged competition, suppression and intimidation. The schools we’ve allowed to develop can’t work to teach nonmaterial values, the values which give meaning to everyone’s life, rich or poor, because the structure of schooling is held together by a Byzantine tapestry of reward and threat, of carrots and sticks. Official favor, grades, and other trinkets of subordination have no connection with education; they are the paraphernalia of servitude, not of freedom.”[3]“Schools are intended to produce, through the application of formulas, formulaic human beings whose behavior can be predicted and controlled.”[4]“…schools and schooling are increasingly irrelevant to the great enterprises of the planet. No one believes anymore that scientists are trained in science classes or politicians in civics classes or poets in English classes. The truth is that schools don’t really teach anything except how to obey orders.”[5]Gatto minces no words. I had been hoping for the past decade that somebody would write this book. It exhaustively collects all extant data on offshore "tax/regulatory/secrecy havens," detailing their abuses, including: 1) an estimated annual worldwide tax loss of $255 BILLION (primarily from transfer pricing, mis-invoicing intra-group cross-border sales), with the result that by now 60% of large [over $250 million in assets] U.S. corporations pay no taxes, resulting in increased taxes on salaried middle class; 2) facilitation of recent financial crisis, due to opacity of risky assets; 3) facilitation of corruption (bribes, money-laundering, etc.); and facilitation of illegal capital flight, with one NGO estimating that tax havens cost the lives of at least 250,000 children a year in the developing world. And while a number of organizations, such as OECD, IMF, World Bank and others, have made efforts to rein in the worst abuses, must remains to be done. The authors outline several ideas, focusing especially on proposals by the Tax Justice Network for greater transparency. But this problem, as huge as it is, is just one part of the larger problem (soon to be addressed by a UN report by Joseph Stiglitz and David Kennedy) of lack of global economic regulation. Congratulations to the authors on a job well done!

i bought this to study at college. when i read i always headache, even if i am an international student, many class mate also said that. Author should change to be easier to read.

Some aspects of offshore finance take place in a murky world of sham transactions in exotic locales, yet many economists say tax havens play an important role in greasing the machinery of global capitalism and keeping tax-raising bureaucrats at bay. Authors Ronen Palan, Richard Murphy and Christian Chavagneux beg to differ. They see tax havens as fundamentally dishonest; these "fiscal paradises" favor the haves at the expense of the have-nots. While their opinions on the subject are clear, the authors also provide a thorough overview of what's going on in the world's tax havens and what the future might hold for them. Their writing style is a bit dry and disorganized, but they offer plenty of juicy details about the places and institutions that enable tax evasion. getAbstract recommends this book to readers seeking an in-depth study of the rise of offshore financial centers and their place in global finance.

I started this book after finishing Shaxson's "Treasure Islands". Both are excellent : Shaxson's book is more entertaining, with more of a narrative. This book has more details as well as graphs and tables.Between the two, this one probably contains more information. That said, I would encourage people with an interest in the subject to pick up Shaxson's book first for an introduction and then to move on to this book if they want more details on this very important subject. Reading both is still only 500 pages or so!

Moral crusaders against capitalism, international business, privacy rights, sovereignty of non-EU states, abject defenders of kleptomaniac governments who can't stand companies using legal tools.
