Review
"In his lively tour de bird obsessive, Bernd Brunner captures the antics and agonies of the human longing to connect with our feathered brethren, encounters that usually reveal even more about ourselves than the bird in hand."--Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix"A delightful exploration into the enduring allure of one of nature''s most charismatic creatures."-- Mark Barrow, author of A Passion for Birds"There are more of us bird crazies out here than you know. Birdmania will make you want to become one, too. As always, Bernd Brunner's writing is scintillating and comprehensive as he explores another mysterious aspect of human obsession."--David Rothenberg, author of Why Birds Sing and Survival of the Beautiful"Like bird watching itself, reading Birdmania is filled with surprises and a sense of discovery. But in this collection it is the watchers, not the birds, who are on display --ornithologists and bird lovers of every description, revealed in sketches and anecdotes that are quirky, intriguing, and always affectionate. Highly enjoyable."--Thor Hanson, author of Feathers: The Evolution of a Natural Miracle"Birdmania delves into the extraordinarily wide range of people who have observed and documented these beautiful and fascinating creatures. Read this book and be inspired."--Bernd Heinrich, author of One Wild Bird at a Time "Brunner's lively prose and provocative imagery reveal that birds and people have had deep and important connections for millennia."--John Marzluff, author of Welcome to Subirdia and Gifts of the Crow"An exquisitely beautiful book, Bernd Brunner's survey of our historical and cultural relationship with birds is packed with anecdote and interest, and populated with a cast of fascinating and memorable figures who helped forge how we think of birds today, from adventurers to bird-keepers, artists to ornithologists. These stories about birds are ultimately reflections on the curious nature of humanity itself."--Helen Macdonald, author of H is for Hawk"Our knowledge of science and natural history is built on the images and writings of those that came before us. Birdmania is a beautiful tribute to the pioneers who immersed themselves in the world of birds."--Gerrit Vyn, author of The Living Bird"Birdmania is a fascinating kaleidoscope of colorful stories that illustrate the great variety of connections between humans and birds throughout time. Sit back and enjoy these tales of falconers, explorers, egg collectors, scientists, musicians, artists, criminals, doting bird owners, bird watchers, and people who have devoted their lives, and sometimes lost them, in their efforts to learn more about avian life. You will be well rewarded."--Jo Miles Schuman, co-editor, with Joanna Bailey Hodgman, of A Spicing of Birds: Poems by Emily Dickinson-- (04/04/2017)

Really interesting book that not only introduces you to bird lovers throughout history but also shows examples of the art the birds featured in.
There is a magic spell that birds cast over many individuals that develops into a passion for possessing, studying, observing and even living with our fine feathered friends. Whether they be raptors, pigeons, penguins, parrots, sparrows, even hummingbirds and more of the common and exotic avian species, author Bernd Brunner has captured the stories of hundreds of bird enthusiasts through the ages, from Aristotle down to modern day. Many have been scholars, and some have even been scoundrels, their histories are recorded with their avian exploits along with their personal peccadilloes. Some of the names are familiar such as Darwin, Peterson, Audubon, Mayr, Lorenz; but others such as Napoleon, Rothschild, Lear and too many more shed new light on this fanatic enthusiasm for birds. In early days, the gun was the means of capturing these enchanting forms, then they were used as fashion displays and too many slaughtered, until more recently the camera and binocular became the instrument of choice. While there are more than 10,000 bird species, this number is continually endangered by the constant trapping, environmental fluctuations, chemical hazards and always, the nefarious cat. Along with the amazing chronicles of bird devotees, the pages are filled with dazzling illustrations of many of the birds mentioned making this a remarkable treasure collection about birds and their lovers.
In looking at this book at a bookstore or library, an immediate attraction are the numerous mostly color, striking illustrations taken from various works. With regard to the text itself, what you are seeking in this book will influence your satisfaction. If you want to hear about it seems anyone who has ever watched birds intently or collected eggs or feathers, this is the book for you. Some of the coverage is brief and some is more extended. In places, I found slogging through one commentary of a person after another tiresome. The book does not provide that much information on the biology of birds, if that is your interest. For example, the chapter, "Flight Trackers," concerns bird migration. While the text mentions in passing how they could find their way from point A to point B, it doesn't delve into that aspect in detail. If you want more about the actual biology of birds, then a book like "Beaks, Bones, and Bird Songs" or "The Genius of Birds" would be a good choice.
If you didn't suffer from ADD before picking this book up, you will after having read it. The chapterlets hiccough abruptly along, from one incomplete anecdote to the next, with no attempt at all to create a narrative or even an interesting framework. Everything appears to be drawn helterskelter from secondary sources, and the whole is a miscellaneous jumble of what I suppose were intended as evocative tidbits but come out instead as disconnected stutters of prose. Some of the author's supremely annoying verbal tics are less in evidence in this translation than in the original, for which English readers can be grateful, but all in all this is not a pleasant or an informative book at all.
Intriguing historical overview of the fascinating characters enthralled by birds. This is a book about people with beautiful images of birds and illustrious birders.
