It was amazing to see how critical takeoff was for concorde. I don't think the tire situation was anything equaled on any other aircraft, subsonic or supersonic. In addition, the failure to take positive action to prevent the same situation that occurred during takeoff from Washington DC some years earlier was the primary cause of this accident.

Very good and interesting book. I knew about this but not the details. This book is basically everything about the Concorde and well written.

"Last Days of the Concorde" is the companion book to "Air Disasters: Concorde - Up in Flames" from season eight of the Smithsonian Channel television series. I didn't see the "Air Disasters" documentary, so I can't comment on how the information in the book compares. The author is journalist Samme Chittum, who also wrote the first two books in this series. She is a good storyteller who weaves human stories and technical details fluidly into a compelling narrative. This is the story of Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic jet bound for New York, that took off from Charles de Gaulle-Roissy airport in Paris on July 25, 2000 and flew only 9.5 kilometers (6 miles), about 66 meters (200 feet) off the ground, before crashing on a small hotel in Gonesse, killing 113 people, including four people on the ground and all passengers and crew on the plane. The Concorde had been flying for Air France and British Airways since 1976 without any fatalities until that day, so the crash forever altered the image of supersonic passenger travel and contributed to the Concorde's retirement three years later. The author begins by introducing us to the ill-fated plane's crew and some of its passengers, most of whom were German vacationers. Chittum takes the reader through that day, the delays, the takeoff, the horrified air traffic controller who spots the flames spewing from the plane's wing fuel tank, the crash just 1 minute 18 seconds after takeoff, and the devastation that it wreaked in Gonesse. From there, the book goes back in time to the Concorde's conception in the 1960s, when fuel was cheap, noise was seemingly irrelevant, and the aviation industry was optimistic about supersonic passenger travel.Chittum explains the design that set the Concorde apart from other aircraft and enabled it to travel at supersonic speeds but take off and land at subsonic speeds. Then it is forward to the crash investigation conducted by the BEA in France, joined by one representative of the NTSB in the United States, Bob MacIntosh, because the plane's tires were American-made. The BEA investigators, MacIntosh, the acting local air traffic controller, and retired Concorde pilots are interviewed for their perspectives on the accident. The investigation begins on the runway, moves to the "black boxes", the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, and into laboratories to reconstruct some elements of the fatal events. Investigators learn "how happenstance and entropy can conspire to wreak havoc" and specifically how all hell broke loose in three fateful seconds on that runway.I won't go into the cause of the crash here, so as not to introduce any spoilers, but that plane had extraordinarily bad luck that day. In her concluding chapters, Chittum follows the aftermath of the investigation, the civil and criminal court cases, the safety upgrades made to get the Concordes flying again, and their retirement from service less that two years later. In the end, it would have cost too much to overhaul the aging fleet. Interestingly, there are supersonic passenger planes in development currently. I cannot help but think we might see history repeat itself. Several major airlines were interested in purchasing the Concorde in the 1960s but lost interest by the time the plane was available in the 1970s. In any case, I enjoyed "Last Days of the Concorde" a lot and look forward to reading more in the "Air Disasters" series.

Last Days of the Concorde takes an in-depth look at the crash of Flight 4590 and ultimately the mothballing of the entire Concorde fleet of airliners. The story of the Concorde is as complicated as the airplane itself was. A joint venture between the U.K. and French governments helped to launch the world's first, and so far only, supersonic commercial airliner. Decades in the making, it was one of the most complex and powerful aircraft ever built. It shuttled the rich and famous across the Atlantic in a fraction of the time that other airlines took and lifted passengers closer to the edge of space than they had ever been able to go. Cruising at Mach 2+ at an altitude of around 58,000 feet, it was the world's fastest luxury liner. The Concorde's demise began with the crash of Flight 4590. Taking off from Paris, it was the first and only Concorde flight to crash, killing all passengers and crew on board. It ended the Concorde's nearly spotless safety record, having flown for over 20 years without a single fatality. The crash was just the beginning of the aircraft's downfall though. The aging fleet, split between Air France and British Airways, was by far the most complicated and expensive commercial aircraft ever to take to the skies. Designed prior to the oil crisis of the 1970's it used several times as much fuel as other airliners and cost a small fortune each day to operate. As a result, ticket prices became outrageously expensive and the airliner began to lose popularity in its later years. Ultimately, poor economics led to its downfall more than the crash that this book largely concentrates on, which is why after nearly 20 years no other aircraft manufacturer has followed in the Concorde's footsteps and delivered Supersonic travel to the public. The book delivers many detailed accounts of the crash of Flight 4590 and its subsequent investigation. It covers bits and pieces of the legendary airliner's history without delving too deep into its origin and early years. The story of the investigation and eventual demise of the Concorde is quite a fascinating story that has a lot more twists and turns than you might imagine. Even those who have researched the subject quite extensively will find some interesting new pieces of information here. There are a lot of behind the scenes factoids that you won't likely find anywhere else.About the only critique I have of this book is its sometimes painfully detailed descriptions of places and things that would be much easier explained with a simple photo or drawing. Sometimes, a picture actually is worth a thousand words. It would also have been nice to see some additional photos of the fleet and its various incarnations. Other than that, it was a pleasure to read.
