A very revealing book about the almost unknown personality of Gandhi's wife, written by her grandson. Full of interesting and moving domestic details, and showing her contributions and personal help to her great husband's doctrine of peaceful revolution.

I WAS SURPRISED BY THE BREADTH OF KASTUR GANDHI. I READ GHANDI'S AUTOBIO YEARS AGO AND WISH I HAD THIS AS A COMPANION THEN. A GOOD READ!

was a gift

In this tribute to his grandmother, the wife of Mahatma Gandhi, Arun Gandhi and his wife relied, not only on personal memories – since his grandmother, Kasturba, known as Ba, died when he was five -- but also on oral histories and papers left by Mahatma -- Mohandas Gandhi, known as Bapu. Thus, while the book was about his grandmother, the first part was told primarily based on information from his grandfather. It traces the history of Mohandas Gandhi from the time of his marriage when he was 13, and tells of the eagerness he felt to be with his wife and his happiness with her. Yet, in later years, he was adamantly against child marriage, and, though some of the logic is explained, I wish Arun had explained why Mohandas opposed something that gave him so much pleasure. Another thing that could have been elaborated was the daily labor of women in India, with the assumption that Kastur had her share. Life in India at that time required a lot of work which was mostly done by women, and although we are told that Kastur was exhausted from her labor every night, I would have liked a description of what that labor entailed. I understand they did not have running water, yet they placed a great emphasis on cleanliness. How did they accomplish this? The book does not tell. The book is at its best describing the life and struggles of a strong-minded woman who shared and even inspired the Indian leader who used nonviolence as a weapon to free India. As a biography it traces the lives of this couple as they repeatedly risked their lives and served time in jail in order to advance the causes of freedom and dignity of the Indian people.

This is the first book I have read about the Gandhi family. It was educational, intriguing and thought provoking. The book introduced many aspects of Indian and Hindu culture and their history which helped me to understand Indians and Bengali's in our area. It also gave great insight into the importance interfaith dialogue and cooperation plays in peaceful solutions. The author portrayed a very human side of Gandhi and Kastur which shifted my worldview and my unrealistic and glorified imagine of them.Being aware of Kastur's role in Gandhi's movement in liberating the women of India is inspiring and up-lifting. Her strength and courage to be willing to make a stand for the greater good was definitely is a sacrifice but one that left a lasting legacy. Thanks so much to Arun and Sunanda Gandhi for offering the women of today a role model of strength, courage and compassion.

This very readable story of Mrs. Gandhi is filled with fascinating episodes of her life and describes her significant role in India's history. Readers will discover that Mrs. Gandhi was a woman of impressive strength, endurance and courage. The grandson of Kastur and Mahatma Gandhi, Arun, who co-authored the book along with his wife Sunanda, shares his observations of Mr. and Mrs. Gandhi's interactions which delightfully illustrate Katurba's wit and gentle humor. What makes this book particularly interesting to read is Arun Gandhi's first-hand accounts of his grandmother, his grandfather and some of the remarkable events which led to India's freedom from British rule.

This is the first book I read that focuses on the life of Gandhi and Kasturba, and not on the political situations of the time. It talks more about how Gandhi and Kasturba handled different and often difficult decisions they made during their lifetime. This book talks a lot about how Kasturba endured and supported Gandhi's extreme ideals ( simplicity of living at any cost). It was a continuous struggle for her to strike a balance betn. following Gandhi's ideals and providing the best possible care and tutoring for her children. The focus on truth at all costs (even at the cost of disowning their eldest child - Manilal) shines thru in this book.

A good attempt by Arun Gandhi to tell the world more about *the woman* behind the succesful Man,Mahatma. But its more an account of Gandhiji's life and then and there he sheds light on Kasturbhai Gandhi which I am sure anybody would know by reading "My Experiments with Truth" by Gandhiji. But its still a good biography to read about the Gandhi family.
