I have long admired the photograph of the woman with her children revealing the impact of the Great Depression on the poor. This image invokes such emotion and sympathy. Never knowing who snapped the image recording it for thousands to see, it was a privilege to learn a bit about the individual responsible.In this children's book the unusual life of Dorothea Lange is briefly told from her history of crippling polio to her traveling across the United States capturing images of the people and their hardships and emotions. As the author states... "she was a storyteller with a camera."The uncorrected proof I received, showed the illustrations in basic neutrals with only touches of color. The figures are basic and look somewhat abstract in form. This is in keeping with the bleak, bare story Dorothea Lange captured in her photography.A children's book, this is a good introduction to how capturing the faces and emotions with a camera can benefit generations to come and tell the story.DISCLOSURE: I received an uncorrected proof to facilitate a review. Gave this to my Dad for Christmas and he can't stop talking about it! He is an avid reader and says as far as he knows there is no other book like it on the market that describes the role of fatherhood in it's stages and then connects it to our heavenly Father. He says it has caused him to reflect on his own father, his role as a father and then grandfather. Just this morning he mentioned that it is also the first book he's read that talks about how important older men are instead of dismissing them into retirement. According to my Dad, this book has something for every man, no matter what stage of life. This book actually came as a recommendation from my 21 year old son who is reading it with his college group; yep, something for everyone!

I have truly enjoyed this book and recommended it to more than a few friends.In essence, a study based on the life of King David in the Bible.Any Christian man, especially those who are fathers to boys would benefit from this read.Eldgridge makes his points in clear concise ways, and then expands on them with Bible references, personal stories, quotes from books, poems and songs.An book that encourages men to embrace the person God created them to be. To enjoy what God has created. To embrace who God has created. And to live in way that is pleasing to Him.If you are on the fence of this book - BUY IT!!Here is how I use the Star-Rating system;1 star = Hate the product- Don't waste your money. Trying to get a refund.2 star = Dislike the product- would not buy it again.3 star = Indifferent- Neither like or dislike the product. Probably not going to recommend to a friend.4 star = Like product. Would recommend.5 star = LOVE the product. If you want a product, buy this one!

Great book. Very enlightening. Even though I didn't have any issues with my parents per se, I was able to recognize areas in my own life that I needed to go back and reclaim and I'm glad I did. This book answered some of the many questions I've always had about my own reactions and attitudes in certain circumstances. Very insightful and well thought out. I recommend this book for anyone that is daring enough to question themselves, take responsibility for their own actions and deeply desire to live as though every reach is a choice that is made 10 stories over nothing.

This is the sequel to Wild at Heart. If you want more of that book or want some clearity as to what was said, this is the book. I love the stages of life he talkes about which i can identify with. It also helps me, who is a little lost in life, to see what is going on and what i should be doing. Where are you at? Where do you want to be?

I got this for a men's group. The first couple of sections were interesting and opened my eyes more to the fact that my son NEEDS to be a kid and that I pretty much skipped over my "cowboy" phase in life. There's good info but all too quickly the book seems to really lose focus and becomes a set of random, long winded almost rants. I'm positive there is a handful of useful information in there but it's tough to stay with it due to the sporadic writing style. 40 plus page chapters just to find a nugget or two of wisdom just didn't cut it for me or some of the other guys. We never finished if that tells you anything.

... It's almost verbatim of The Way of the Wild Heart: A Map for the Masculine Journey.I started reading the introduction and thought "I have heard this story somewhere." Turns out, I have (two points to my memory for the support). Both books have excellent content, but if you have one, you don't need the other. If you haven't read either I would suggest picking ONE of the up.

Whether you've had a good dad or a bad dad, this book is for you. I grew up with a great father who loved me, but there were place of lack that I was never initiated in. This book isn't a definitive step by step guide on every craving of a son's heart, but it really does cover different stages and milestones that blend through each other. It follows a general progression that every man goes through in life, and the general needs the have at the time and the things they face. John Eldredge doesn't make it cut and dry, and I love that. No one is one-size-fits-all. But the analysis of manhood that he speaks on here is very accurate to my life and the lives of every other person I know who has read this book.

First, as a single woman an ache for meeting the kind of man who is Fathered by God began to burn. What an incredible and worthwhile man that would be to have in my life and what a different world we would live in if all men embarked on the masculine journey described in this book.But perhaps more troubling was realizing just how much of this journey I myself have completed and how confused that is in fact making me. I have turned the confusion to God to clarify. I have pursued more masculine paths all my life and done so alone. It caused much pain that was only healed over the last three years when I began a committed walk with the Lord. While alone in the physical realm, He showed me how He has been right there the whole time and He is more then enough. He is all I need. The pain is gone but not the confusion. I find myself leading men and many young men have asked for my mentoring. While I am grateful...I wonder if I'm best suited for this role and still pray to encounter my own King.

A lover of recipes and yet I didn't know we had so many great cookbooks out there called "Chef's Table". When I first learned that Maria was undertaking the task of creating San Diego's Chef Table cookbook I was intrigued. Upon hearing more and more about the good food and Slow Food Community members inside the cookbook I got even more excited. I pre-ordered and glad I did - this book does NOT disappoint.Here in San Diego we have some amazing chefs that are working with local farms and farmer's to bring us the best and to do their part to keep San Diego's waters blue and our environment green. Maria has captured the heart of these good folks and highlighted their efforts. It's beautiful visually, it's content about each chef and restaurant is delightful and most importantly the recipes are inspiring. I cannot wait to make Hanis' Beet Terrine with Balsamic Syrup (pg. 50), Matt's (pg. 182) cheese and chive biscuits, Tommy's (pg. 166) Fisherman's Stew, Kate's (pg. 46) Quiche and Cups Limone Ricotta cupcakes (pg. 63). I don't dare my hand at sausage, but the description and photo of Nick Brune (pg. 120) with Local Habit always delights. Nick is a true master in the kitchen and his passion along with Adam Hiner's is contagious. While I will always miss El Take It Easy, I'm delighted to learn about more local restaurants and their passionate techniques. Maria has done a beautiful job with this "cookbook" it's really more of a magical journey with San Diego Chef's and getting a peak behind the kitchen door.One recipe on this particular day is standing out for me to get on soon however - pg. 184 - Pan Roasted Duck Breast with Roasted Squash from the US Grant Grant Grill. We love California's amazing Mary's Organic Chicken and Free Range (hormone free) duck breasts and I've been looking for a way to do them justice in my own kitchen.The only thing odd is this book is page 199 - with Brian Malarkey's photo but no recipe and just a pitch for his now defunct Burlap in Del Mar. Great condition but there was a delay in delivery. The illustrations and directions are easy to follow. I am very pleased with the content of the book. It is arranged from easy patterns to more difficult. While a beginner could follow the instructions, I think a rudimentary knowledge of bobbin lace making would be best.

Great book

A really great way to learn Beds lace! The instructions are clear and diagrammed, which makes following the patterns easier. The diagrams are not color-coded, which would have been helpful. I think this is THE book to use, if one wants to learn Beds!!

I have become an ardent Ellsworth fan since first hearing of the Thaddeus Murphy series on BookBub. "The Near Death Experience" continues Ellsworth's style of multiple plots converging in each book. Each plot has a wild side, but Ellsworth somehow manages to make them very believable. This book is no different. As with his other books, this one will grab you in the first chapter and make it almost impossible to put down until the end, where you will be anxiously waiting for the next. I won't bother too give a synopsis of the book as reviewers have already done a good job, but I just to say BRAVO for a great read. I have read all of John's books and look forward to many more in the future.

The beginning of this book is not surprising in that it seems to be the norm these days. Doesn't mean us readers need to like it, however.A doctor gets sued after a woman sees him on TV, downloads his best selling book, and after reading it, decides to take his "advice." The family isn't happy so the court appointed conservator for the woman sues in her name..Completely off topic, but it does happen and is important, Henry gets a new truck during a visit with Katy and Thaddeus. Hum.And as a side note, it seems all of Mr. Ellsworth's characters seem to collect children as some of us collect (rescue) critters. I only mention this because Thaddeus gave up his beloved' Mustang for a truck to haul horses and family.BAT's back! For anyone who is reading this as as stand alone or don't remember, when Thaddeus owned a casino and was trying to help people by giving a hand to those who had never had one before, he came across BAT. And that's all I am saying, to avoid any spoilers.FINALLY, someone remembers about the kidnapping. I have been wondering.Rhetorical question: does anyone else get so angry about what a character is going through they want to find and slap the author? Where I am in the book right now, that's what I want to do. Actually (this is not a threat), what I really want to do is slap Mr. Ellsworth til his ears ring for a week. He should still be able to write.By the end of the book, I was sobbing, and I really am not sure why. I still want to hit something, not necessarily the author of this incredible book.Of all the judges I have ever seen on the bench only one did I truly respect. In this book, Mr. Ellsworth has given me another. He denied the jury's request to read the defendant's book, which would have been extremely prejudicial. However, he made several rulings that made me smile.This now is the second book by Mr. Ellsworth that has had me blubbering (the other being a book in his Michael Gresham's 30 Days of Justis), although for completely different reasons. Read both. You deserve it.

THE NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE by John EllsworthThis was a challenging book to read and review, since there were some aspects that I loved and some with which I was very frustrated. In summary, I was glad that I read it but very disappointed that what could have been a five star action and courtroom thriller had so many flaws that the most positive overall rating that I could give it was three stars for okay. It is an uneven read, but is fast moving with interesting plot elements.I have rated the various elements from worst to best with explanations below so that other potential readers can decide how important each is to them. (No details in order to avoid spoilers.)One Star - the writing. This self published author needs to be a good editor or friend willing to critique the story before it is published. There are multiple problems including an unclear timeline that jumps around without transition clues for the reader and characters with inconsistent, outlandish and actions that are at times either unintentionally laughable, shocking or unbelievable. Also, at times words are utilized in the story telling that do not fit the narrative or are unnecessarily flowery. Point of view is also not handled well at times. However, there are not many noticeable typos, grammar or spelling mistakes, as sometime occur in self published works.Two stars - in a book with several previous entries in the series, an author has the job of allowing the reader to understand the backstory without boring fans of the series who have read several previous entries. Unfortunately, the way information is introduced for new readers concerning a crucial element of this story is unsatisfactory and incomplete given its importance, and the character development is occasionally hampered by lack of crucial knowledge regarding some of the relationships.Three stars – the development of basic plot elements, which had five star potential but seemed like they were pasted together at times and distracted from the main plot. The protagonist – whose actions were extremely frustrating at times, ranging from naïve to criminal. The courtroom scenes, many of which were summary and simplistic in order to get the key testimony regarding whether murder had been committed.Four stars – the underlying love story (a wife who is dying of cancer) that was an essential element of the plot, very touching, much more detailed than in many thrillers, and accomplished without any gratuitous sex.Five stars – the key thread in the story, which concerns a doctor who has “returned from the dead” and whose book “inspires” a copycat to attempt to repeat his experience and the legal battle that ensures.The plot is original, the author has done a lot of research on current theories of consciousness and evolving legal and medical definitions of brain death, and this aspect of the plot is thoughtfully developed with several twists and interesting legal discussion of the issues. The best written (and most interesting for me) parts of the story are when this topic is being discussed, and if you are as interested in the topic as I am I strongly recommend the book despite its faults. Also, some of the sections dealing with the protagonist’s emotional state and connection with the Arizona landscape were also compellingly written.Disclaimer: I received an offer to download the Kindle version of this book to introduce me to the series and as an inducement to purchase the newly released book in the series. However, while at the end of the story the author mentions that as a self published author through Amazon he appreciated reviews, there was no previous request and I am not sure that he will even appreciate my rating and many comments of constructive criticism, hoping that they might be addressed in future books in the series.Tucker Andersen 8/6/2016

A former English and reading teacher, Marcia extends her experience working with children who experience difficulties learning to read and write in numerous intervention programs, such as Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative and Book Buddies. Francine Johnston is retired from the Department of Teacher Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she served as Director of Graduate Studies, Coordinator of the Reading Masters Program, and ran a clinic for struggling readers. Francine worked as a first grade teacher and reading specialist for 12 years before getting her doctorate at the University of Virginia where she first learned about a developmental approach to word study and worked with Dr. Marcia Invernizzi to develop word study materials and activities. She consults with school districts across the country and frequently serves as a professional development speaker. Francine is a co-author of many books, including Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction. Donald R. Bear is Professor Emeritus in Literacy and Director of Literacy Centers at Iowa State University and University the University of Nevada, Reno. A former elementary teacher, Donald currently researches literacy development with a special interest in students who speak different languages and he partners with schools and districts to think about how to assess and conduct literacy instruction. Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor Emeritus of Literacy Studies in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. A former classroom teacher at the primary and secondary levels, he has focused his research on the development of orthographic and vocabulary knowledge. He has written several books on the teaching and learning of reading and language arts and is a member of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. My problem with the book is the publisher, but Amazon needs to be aware of the problem. This book has an online component. The online information was not accessible due to a faulty access code given at the back of the book. After 2 hours on the phone with Pearson, the publishers would not honor the purchase of the book and give me a correct code because Amazon was a third party purchase.

Loving the new Common Core Update. I do miss having just a disc with all the word sorts. Not a fan of accessing the website and only having access for a year with the program.

Hmmm - This is really a very formal tool and research document for teachers rather than something that can easily translate into home work exercises. I'm not really someone who returns books, but I can also tell that I will not be able to use this with my 10.5 year old, nor will her tutor readily be able to incorporate lessons in it. I did not fully read the book, but I'm also not inspired to do so.

This book is amazing and has a ton of resources, I wish it had ways to help you record data from the interventions it gives you. I also wish i could change my rented book into a purchased book without having to send it back and reorder it.

An essential purchase for those using this method to teach reading. I had already picked up the word sort texts from another vendor, but this text provides vital instructor support. I would have preferred an instructor access code,however, instead of the student access code provided. Since the student online toolkit provides a generous assortment of games, assessments, videos, and additional resources, I didn't pursue the matter any further. Overall, an excellent resource for tutoring or teaching reading to elementary and middle school students.

I purchased this for a college course but now use it all the time as a new teacher to assess my students weekly. Kids like the online sorting games and is easy to use. I am a special education teacher and teach using alternate curriculum with CCEE standards. I have seen improvement with my students who are labeled as CD. Not just for regular education!

Felt like there were so little differences between the last edition and this one. Disappointed.

Overly complicated and the CD's only work on certain computers. I have two running the same OS and the CD's only worked on one of them. I'm sure it's great and worth the time for a large class but for a home schooler of 1 child it's not. I would save your money and just download the evaluation pages for free from any number of sitests and then use that to decided what workbook to use. Also the suggested sorting and games can be found freely on many homeschooling blogs.
