Omg my 2 boys loved this book ages 6 and 11. The youngest one would to know who wrote the book and had so many questions after reading it. Great job on the illustration and language, also the small activities in the back are a plus and kept both of them having a questioning mindset.

This book is essential reading for anyone who builds network applications based on Netty. Netty has a powerful but finicky event-based model for sending data to and from the network. The framework looks simple when you start but under the covers are 378 KLOC of Java, which means a lot of hidden complexity.Netty in Action has great explanations of the event processing model, management of memory, and all major components in the data model. It's the clearest description of how Netty works that I have been able to find anywhere. The text not only explains how things like event loops work but also considerations like simplifying concurrency that drove the designers that drove the designers to pick that particular model. In addition the code samples are excellent. I'm working on an application that proxies WebSocket traffic, and it happens that this book has a number of relevant, well written samples that show exactly how to build such applications. One final thing I like about the book: it's short. If you need more detail look at the code. You'll have enough understanding of the model to understand what you are looking at.Network programming is inherently complex. Netty in Action won't solve every problem you'll encounter with applications or with Netty itself. That said, it's an excellent reference that should be open on the desk whenever you write Netty applications.

Background: I'm a recent graduate and have been working full time as a software engineer for 7 months. Even though I'm programming Java and Scala on day-to-day basis I have a very limited experience with network programmingThe level of details in this book feels just right for me. Not too detailed as a reference book but not too basic. It really goes deep into the underlying of Netty as well as the API. I like the way the author presents the content. For each section, there's always a section on the older way to do things (JDK) and reasons why we needed Netty.Of course, to become expert in it you still need to read the source code and implement something yourself, but this book makes it very easy to do both of those things.

This book provides a good overview of what Netty is and how to implement solutions with it with lots of code examples. However, the code examples are written in an older version of Java (6?), so Java features that have been around for years to make code more succinct aren't seen here (try-with-resources, the "diamond" operator, method references, etc.) and some of the methods can be a little difficult to read due to being overly long with too much nesting.

Gives a much needed introduction to Netty that is missing on the web.The documentation maintains a consistent pace which although might be a bit slow while reading I'm thankful for when I finally try to implement some of the ideas in practice.For anyone interested in getting into Netty or using any popular frameworks that utilize Netty this is a necessary book in your compendium.I'd love to see some of these chapters make its way into the Netty Wiki

Part 1 illustrates the architecture and building blocks of Netty. It's readable and clear.After two introductory chapters the book delves into the details.The building blocks of the library are described: channel, event loops, channel pipeline, channel handlers.Part 2 is only two chapters long and gives more details about encoders and decoders.Most importantly the second chapter describes some of the most useful encoders/decoders that Netty provides.Part 3 is entitles "Network Protocols" and its two chapters discuss WebSockets and UDP.Part 4 dedicates 45 out of 245 pages of the entire book to illustrate case studies: successful uses of the library within well-known companies.Each case is illustrated in a few pages that attempt to describe the project as well as the problem Netty was used to solve.Except for promoting Netty's adoption, it does little to deepen your understanding of it.Code sample are brief and generally easy to follow.Except for a simple introductory example in chapter 2, there are no real life full blown examples in the book.All the space devote to part 4 could have been used instead to provide some complete, non trivial examples where the various core classes and several encoders/decoders are all used together.Methods of the most important classes are often presented in tables with brief descriptions accompanying them.Some methods are described in the text and used in the code snippets but other methods are not. For some methods this is inadequate.Book review and proof reading wasn't that great.Chapter 9, on unit testing, has been moved around without adjusting references and content.It uses encoders to provide examples but these are only introduced in a later chapter.Also some classes or methods (like HTTPCodec from chapter 11 or Channel.closeFuture() from chapter 2) are used in the sample code without any actual definition in the text. Sure, you can guess what they do but a few lines in the text could have helped.Annoyingly, from Chapter 13 onward all references to figures and listings are off by 1 chapter.I give it three stars as an overall evaluation.I don't mean to discourage you from reading the book: it is a nice introduction to Netty, explains its concepts well and the information provided is pretty accessible.However some parts are dismissed a bit too quickly especially in lieu of all the space given to part 4 and book review/proof reading was a bit lacking.

This book is so great that I am showing women at the gym how important the Psoas Muscle is to the body,the emotions, and staying limber. The information Liz Koch presents is extremely worthwhile knowing. I have found that working out can make my body tight and less limber. What I do, for example, work upper body like shoulders and arms and chest then I go to the mat and work the upper Psoas muscle. When I do squats and work the lower body and get tightness or pain in lower back and buttocks. I go to the mat and work the lower Psoas in my body. If you like to body build this book is a way of staying limber and having less soreness. Also, I have learned that when the Psoas muscle shrinks, fatigues or dries out, there is the strong possibility how we may have lots of back pain and how the upper back can become rounded. I am impressed with the knowledge I have gained from this book.

This is an easy read, but I will go back to it over and over again for reference. Koch gives good explanations of how the psoas is related to other body systems and functional movement problems. "Awareness" is probably the most important word in the book. As a yoga instructor I work to help students make that mind-body connection, and awareness is a huge part of that. In Part II of the book, Koch provides good explanations and photos of movements that: wake up the core, lengthen the psoas, center & balance the pelvis (and leg muscles), and explore the joints. The final chapter pulls it all together with movements that deepen core awareness --- but be sure to read & do the previous chapters first! Koch has provided information and movement that can easily be incorporated into teaching many types of body movement. -- Linda J., RYT200, RYT500

This is an amazing book to make you aware of how your body functions and how to move with much more ease. Liz Koch writes well and is easily understandable. A lightbulb will go off for you and you will notice you are standing taller within a short time. The comfort level you feel in your body will exceed your expectations. I highly recommend anyone with any soreness in their body read this book to understand how the psoas is the "messenger of the midline". You will become very mindful of your core.

The book needs anatomical illustrations to help guide you through.It's too wordy and too out there for me to be able to fully translate the subject matter to clients and it's a dry read and not enough exercises.

Really awesome descriptions of how to be more and more aware of your core. I found this book to be quite useful, not just for myself but also for helping my clients feel how to move their bodies more functionally.

Great description of the importance of the psoas, literally "central" to all movement, standing upright and emotional center. I found the exercise descriptions a bit difficult to implement, would love to attend one of her workshops to get guidance. The psoas is so overlooked and unaddressed in the medical field. My goal is to develop a better care program for mine.

Absolutely learned a whole new category of health. Surprisingly accurate.

i would suggest that the book had more photos about the muscles and /or the body itself. It only makes sense to me, since the book its about the psoas and the location/function etc and includes other muscles and parts of the body. other than that the book is very useful, i love it!

I was a technologist in my pre-retired life. In technology, one must read many sources and a study the data before deciding on which direction to take in solving a problem. Investing is no different. If this is done, Guy's book is a great help. In reading Guy's book, one can gain a great deal of insight. It is very worthwhile for a value investor to read. No book offers a magic answer on investing. If you want insight, Guy's book can help a great deal. I was helped by reading it.

I meet Guy many years ago while attending a Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting and have followed his career ever since. When I saw it appear in an Amazon search I do regularly I ordered it immediately.First, the book was not what as I had expected as many others have noted and I was surprised at how frank it was. Sharing your personal mistakes in such a manner couldn't have been easy but Guy has provided his readers with several valuable lessons that I hope young readers take to heart My first job was also at a firm that I wasn't proud to work at, Conseco Capital Management. I worked on the Axys reporting system and I quickly learned what kind of firm I didn't want to work at. I hope all Guy's young readers keep in mind how important it is to work in an environment that you feel comfortable in with people that you admire.It's also so important to analyze your behavior and believe in yourself. I practice concentrated investing which many people in the institutional investing world think is pure craziness but it suits my temperament. I think Guy also talks about in his book how important it is to follow your own path with readers would do well to try and follow their own path to happiness and success.I highly recommend the book, especially to those who have an interest in the investing industry.

Anyone interested in trying to improve as an investor (or as a person) will get something out of this book.While the title has "Value Investor" in it, this is as much a book on human psychology as it is on investing. In it, Guy Spier takes the reader into his own mind and maps out his personal evolution into a better investor/person -- and as importantly, a more fulfilled human being.The concepts introduced in the book are scarcely earth-shatteringly novel. The author borrows freely and heavily from the Buffett/Munger school, and from the well trodden fields of psychology and biology. None of this takes away from the impact of the book. The value add of this book is that Guy walks the reader through his own learning experience from these fields and from Buffett/Munger. This postmortem of Guy's experience is useful and extremely interesting in and of itself.A long list of "guide to further reading" at the end of the book provides the reader with tools to continue her education beyond this one volume. I highly recommend this book.

If I had to pick two books on the subject, I'd pick Mohnish's Dhando, and Guy's book. Two great books on the subject, and they both talk about so much more. It's a very clear, disciplined approach to investing. I'm a huge fan of Warren Buffett, and it's very inspiring to see both Guy and Mohnish follow his teachings today, and post very respectable returns. It's a very refreshing read in the crazy days of day trading, and chasing the next hot thing, when the old and tested ways work as good as ever, and still very few follow them religiously. The approach is simple, but staying loyal and committed to it still proves to be hard for most. Thank you both for taking the time to write those two amazing books!

This is, hands down, one of the best books I have ever read. And it is a very rare, unique kind of book. Some of the summaries I read after finishing the book, even positive ones, made it sound quaint and trite, along the lines of, "Oh, how cute, an investment banker with a heart of gold." But in reality, this book has astounding depth--depth of introspection and self-awareness, which is then integrated with an entire philosophy of investing (the value investing school of investing). As a 30-year-old male who, along with my dearest friends, has made it through a "quarter life crisis" surprised to find where it has taken me, such a book filled with honest reflections is invaluable. I wish every trade or profession had such a book. The world would be an incredibly better place. And I know that, too, sounds trite, but I'm deathly serious. This is a book I will cherish for the rest of my life.I would also recommend this book to anyone who considers her or himself a general student of self-improvement. The author has surveyed a wide variety of books from the fields of self-improvement and psychology (the bibliography alone deserves a close read), and his candor in speaking about what he gained (or didn't) from these lesson and experiences, as applied to a specific life and career, provides the reader with a concretized narrative to see such ideas as reality in action and not mere abstractions.
