the person who sent this to me sent me two of the same books one with the correct cover but the book under the cover was a duplicate i had just read. So I had to track down the book that was missing in the series and pay again for the one book. I have had to put reading the series off until i get the next book in the series which is Maximum Ride Saving The World And Other Extreme Sports.

My "almost 13" year old Grandaughter was so excited to get this set of books. She has already read them before (library books)and told me she wanted to read them all again. I love to see people read this day in time and especially children. I was so happy to find the whole set available to purchase for her. However, she was more than happy, she was SUPER ECSTATIC to get them . I was going to give them to her for her upcoming birthday but just couldn't help myself. Thank you

I have the former Kindle editionNot clear form the commentaries what is new in this edition.........if not for a new ACE or CC-blocker??I would be wise that Amazon would comment on this.The book [my edition ] is clear and has certainly very useful information.More personal experience one can find in: Hypertension and you [Samual J. Mann, M.D] which is really excellent.

only informative if you profoundly uninformed

You'll find a lot of good information in this book if you can get past the author's mildly irritating tone. He comes off as sort of a jocular, slightly condescending uncle. Although the book's organization is a little odd, I it fairly easy to navigate to the sections I needed to read. There's good information about both drug and non-drug treatments for high blood pressure, as well as a pretty good explanation of exactly what high blood pressure is and what those numbers mean.

Great intro to coaching kids and coaching track and field. Good basic understanding of all the events. I've coached at all levels, from Elementary to D1 NCAA and this is the best all around guide I've found for young track and field athletes.The book goes through forming a team, practicing, some event specific drills, and going to meets. Doesn't get into a lot of detailed event particulars - but if you need that, then you're past the level of this book anyway.

Perfect reference and knowledge guide for working with youth runners, throwers, & jumpers as advertised. I transitioned from high school to middle school T&F and realized right off that I needed to retool and this was the perfect buy. I originally had the kindle fire edition of this book and went ahead and purchased the hard copy as well.

This book has given me great insight into the approach of coaching youth. This was a good purchase for me since for the past 5-6 years, I've been coaching adults. I'm really looking forward to the Track season.

This book was essential to the success of my program. Having never run or coached track before I bought 5 different books on coaching youth, developing speed and agility, but this was the only one I needed.It covers mechanics and technique of running, jumping and throwing, as well as drills and general coaching development. I have notes sticking out of almost every page, and I return to this book almost every practice.

Many years ago when I first learned of Dr. Pagel's husband death, I was at the time a subscriber to the Sciences magazine and his obituary was part of an editorial, I thought to my self, bad things do happen to good people. As I read this book, Why Religion? I became more and more intrigued by the continual questioning of personal misfortunes by the author. Through it all—the frightening aspect of being the sole provider, becoming accustom to loneliness, and the slow passing of time, became too real to this reader. Afterward, I stood and questioned my beliefs in good and evil and what those concepts meant to me. I could not put down the book as I was drawn into Dr. Pagel's narrative and wanted to know the end result. But like a cushioned landing I was let down gently and walked away knowing all humans share the same questions. At the end, I immediately remembered the Pilgrims Mass at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compestla, Spain and that part of the mass where the expression of peace is shared by the attendees...suddenly, the words, "May peace be with you," are expressed in Spanish, French, Portualgese, German, Japanese, Italian, so many other languages but all conveying the same sentiment. I feel enlighten by the book and the fact that humans believe in hope and in a better tomorrow. Thank you, Dr. Pagel for sharing.

I logged onto my Amazon account to purchase this book - but find that the ebook for the Kindle (my preferred format) is more expensive than the hardback copy! That makes no sense to me and I won't support the illogic of the pricing structure.

The first half of the book tells the story of the death of her son and then her husband. As horrid as this story was and is, it was not what I expected. Just as I was growing weary (?) of this terrible sequence of events and its effect on her, she layers on the texture provided by the Bible and the Gnostic Gospels and the entire story begins to fall in place. This book is different than her other books. I am a loyal fan and, in the end, this book added knowledge and perspective. The answers to our questions may lie, in part, in ourselves. And finally, Fr. Barbour, faith is a gift.

There is reading a book, and there is drinking up a book as if you are unexpectedly thirsty for precisely its taste, for what it is. This is a drinking book. It offers much to readers who have been moved by Dr. Pagels' previous works, to those who have found their way independently to the Gnostic Gospels, to any for whom the question "Why Religion?" is vivid. In a time when there is so much idiocy, this book represents the height of intelligence, not only of mind but of heart.

A moving personal story written beautifully and with depth. In asking universal questions about suffering and weaving in her quest for meaning, Dr. Pagel shows us a way to understand the imponderables of life. A must read for anyone who cannot find the answers in dogmatic religion—and for anyone dealing with grief. As poetic and impactful as Joan Didion’s Year of Magical Thinking, but perhaps with more hope. It moved me to tears, and I could not put it down!

Religious scholar Elaine Pagels memoir about her life including how she was personally brought to religious faith after the death of her 6 year old son and, the following year, the death of her husband famous physicist Heinz Pagels in a mountaineering accident. Extremely honest, raw and ultimately uplifting, a beautifully written book about surviving the worst life can dish out. Highly recommend.

Brilliantly written, without dogma, exposition of why religion persists in the face of the onslaught of rational thinking. Dr Pagels includes the story of her own terrible personal losses to illustrate her need for finding some deeper meaning in life thru her research on Christianity. I found this book when I was most in need of it.

I have read most all of Elaine Pagel's works and they along with Joseph Campbell's works (especially Tho Art That) have aided me on a journey to seek the truth of my being. Here she bares her soul to the breaking point and through it al comes out the other side with grace and dignity.The only downgrade is when Ms. Pagels becomes somewhat political in the last chapter. One quick example is stating President Bush wanted to wage a war on Muslims. To be fair he stated he would protect us from Radical Muslim terrorists wherever they resided. Outside of that minor quibble I thoroughly enjoyed her latest book as I have her other's works.FR Bailey

The creative formula is a well written, incredibly useful and easy to follow formula for discovering what you are meant to create, creating it and releasing it into the world. The author does a wonderful job of making this process easy and understandable while allowing yourself to be gentle and forgiving with yourself in the process. She also truly has a knack for using metaphor and storytelling to make the material accessible for all learning styles as well as leading by example and through honest vulnerability.As a coach, dancer and teacher of movement, I found many wonderful nuggets of wisdom that I will use in my creative process for the rest of my life. She includes an array of great self-evaluation surveys and exercises for all stages of the process and shows you how to apply them to your art form whether that be dance, music, writing, acting, fine art or any other creative endeavor. It helps you go through this process, not in a linear fashion but in a way that is true to you and where you are in your life on any given day. The book contains some interesting premises most notably that rural (redneck) America may not be as homophobic as people think. Unfortunately, the book is way too long and repetitive. If could have made a great article for The New Yorker.

Extremely well researched, with many valuable insights. Very dense in style, almost but not quite crossing the line into sociological jargon.

"Rednecks" is musical history that tells the story of the cultural creation of the powerful American middle class (the "narrating" class) using the concept of taste, detailing how although the middle class has become musically omnivorous of late, distaste for country music in particular defines this cultural group against its nemesis-reflection-- the white working class. Hubbs describes how the latter group, lacking the power of narration, has been characterized in the dominant image as a bigoted, ignorant mass dumbly voting against its own economic interests due to an unhealthy obsession with conservative social exclusionary causes including racism, sexism and homophobia. She explores country music lyrics, presenting a great deal of evidence suggesting that working class America is not inherently homophobic, but that as middle class cultural taste has changed to include formal acceptance of homosexuality, this process has included pinning homophobic ideas on the working class. This insight may be shocking to middle class readers who with the best of intentions have likely absorbed many of these social constructions as truths, thinking of mobs of ignorant working-class Americans as the "problem" with America, the ones voting Republican, the group maintaining all types of blind bigotry, while enlightened and educated middle class members appreciate all the world's cultural forms except country music, of course, and the lead good fight against bigotry in any form. Hubbs destroys this image of the heroic middle class, not only by pointing out how mythological the stereotypes are, but also showing just how the narrating class maintains systemic bigotry while scapegoating voiceless groups. As if that weren't enough rich history and hegemony-busting insight, Hubbs also takes the reader through a fascinating class-based and musical history of being queer in America. If you are interested (and how could you not be?) in music history, the formation of the social classes in the U.S., the way dominant cultural narratives are formed and maintained, and/or the histor(ies) of queer America, told through class- and race-based lenses, you will find this book a fascinating read. Although it is an academic book, non-academic readers will find its broad insights and dense knowledge presented in an accessible, enjoyable manner.
