This is an excellent book about narcissism and narcissistic abuse. It covers a lot of ground and is helpful for those of us who have suffered at the hands of these evil monsters. The title seemed to me to be "revenge" seeking, but it is not. The book is focused on education of how the victim has been hooked and made to be trapped and how to heal once you get out. There are a number of typos and some of the content appears to be a cut and paste job from other writings. I hope the author will clean these issues up and that would help to make this book a tremendous reference worthy of strong professional use as well as for the victims.

All I kept saying to myself during my read of this book was "Holy Crap!!!" And I'm only through a quarter of the book!! I'm tempted to call my narc husband and tell him that someone wrote his biography, because this book reads like HIS PLAYBOOK!! My gut kept telling me all along something was wrong, but since my husband is real good at maintaining the facade of caring, and an expert at downplaying my feelings and doling out the intermittent presents, I had a hard time reconciling the 'caring' facade with the cold sadistic attitude. This author shows why I and you are targeted by narcissists (being successful, and/or empathetic), and how your best qualities are used against you by the twisted narc. I really was feeling stupid after wasting years on a narc spouse, but in truth, the reason I was used is because I'm a good person and therefore a predator narc's primary target for abuse. The author also gives a list of red flags to identify a narc, so you don't waste time on them ever again. Of course there are strategies to deal with any narc that is currently in your life. I would encourage anyone who is in a relationship, even a familial relationship, in which you feel something is wrong, but you can't quite pinpoint the cause....READ THIS BOOK!! You may just find the answer to your confusion and pain...I'm not done reading this book yet, but one thing I can already clearly understand....any narcissist or borderline personality disorder type person who reads this book is going to HATE it....because it EXPOSES them!!!

I have read 50+ books on narcissistic personality disorder, narcissistic abuse, domestic abuse, trauma, PTSD, etc. This book is one of the best. Ms. Arabi is an excellent, thorough and insightful researcher and journalist. She lays the groundwork for recovery by explaining the impact of narcissistic abuse, synthesizing those truths with provocative insights from leading scholars and then offering practical suggestions and methods of recovery.This book is extremely well-documented and well-researched. Arabi not only addresses NPD and narcissistic abuse but delves into PTSD/CPTSD, citing the works of renowned experts such as Judith Herman, M.D., author of the foundational book “Trauma and Recovery,” and Patrick Carnes, Ph.D. (“The Betrayal Bond”). She also ties in the work of Bessel van der Kolk M.D., who in his book “The Body Keeps the Score” reveals how trauma rewires the the brain, along with dozens of other sources, both classic and contemporary.Each chapter of Arabi’s book features an impressive endnotes section as well as links to articles, podcasts and social media resources. She manages to combine all these sources into a comprehensive and revealing look at narcissistic abuse and its effects on the survivor. She then offers practical tips and alternatives for recovering from the trauma of narcissistic abuse. I was personally inspired and motivated by her creative recommendations for recovery – I even surprised myself by experimenting with the guided meditation links and redoubling my commitment to doing Zumba four times a week. And I haven’t even finished reading the book!Bravo, Ms. Arabi, and thank you! I very much recommend this book.

This is not the first book I have read on NPD. I wish this would have been the very first book I read, instead. It would have saved me of much headache and heartache. I am not finished reading this book, but I had to come in here and provide a review already. Just from the very first pages, this book has been able to help me understand my own personal situation with the narcissist in my life. A book that finally says it clearly the way it is and with sounded advise, not just for professionals in the field, but for the regular folk who has unfortunately been the victim of narcissist abuse. Because we have to call it for what it is: Abuse. I wish the courts in this country would be given this book and more education on this matter, especially when there are children involved. Courts force you to share custody with the narcissist parent when children and the former spouse should actually be allowed to keep contact to a minimum or no contact at all. In this particular case, exposure to the narcissist is not really a good idea for developing spirits and minds. Anybody who knows anything about NPD will tell you that the best thing to do is to go no contact. Other books suggest to remother the narcissist or do this or that. It does not work with these individuals because in their minds, they are always right and the whole world is conspiring against them. That's the main reason why neither the courts, nor supposed trained professionals can provide a diagnostic of NPD for those individuals because they can put a great act together for the whole world to see. By the time you realize what you're dealing with, you're already caught in their web of lies and deceive. Shahida Arabi explains all of this very clearly, in a way that anybody can understand. She has included clear examples of situations that are the "norm" for those suffering from this abuse. Anybody can see the scars left by violent physical abuse, but when it comes to emotional abuse, it is very difficult to prove in court or even to those who may be close to the victim. Shahida explains all the tools that a narcissist will use to control those around him or her. She shares her own personal and professional experience, as well as those of victims who have entrusted her with their own experience. Some reviews say that she's a bit repetitive at times. I have noticed that while reading the book. But believe me, repetition can be good to make some points, especially after you have been a victim yourself. Some things need to be repeated more than once because you have been gaslighted so much that you have trouble discerning reality from fog and you keep doubting yourself after so much abuse of this kind.For what my own personal opinion might be worth, and from the view point of someone who has suffered the abuse of a narcissist, this book is a must-read. If you're lost and you don't know where to go, you feel isolated and your gut feeling is telling you that something has to change and you don't know who to trust or where to go for help, start with this book. It will help you understand your own situation, why the narcissist in your life treats you kindly one moment to completely ignore you or put you down the next; why that person accuses you of being controlling when you feel you have absolutely no control over your life and you feel that he or she is actually controlling you, instead; you will understand where did that loving, caring, compassionate person of the early stages of your relationship has gone and why you might be now dealing with someone who doesn't even resemble that soulmate of yours; and more. I love the fact that she's been there and she's done her hard work to understand this pathology not only from a victim's stance, but from a professional point of view.I also got the Kindle version since it is free when you buy the book and I had absolutely no problems downloading it. I had noticed a few slight changes from the paper to the electronic version (I'm guessing one is a newer edition, not sure why there're these slight differences, but it seems to just be an editing thing.) But there are minimal and it doesn't affect. I love that I can read the book on my tablet or from the paper copy with no problems.I think I said enough. I could go on talking about it, but I will let the book speak for itself. Read the sneak-preview in here. If you're a victim, I'm sure you'll identify yourself even in those few pages. That's what happened to me. Only a victim can understand what I mean.

Is this book basically an advertisement for OpenView Venture Partners?Whoa, did someone say OpenView Venture Partners?Long story short, if you can look past the auto-fellatio, this book offers a good introduction to the Agile framework, its history, and many interesting examples of its use across industries.But I honestly feel like I need to go read Donald Trump and Kanye's autobiographies to remember what (relative) humility sounds like.

If I had a nickel for every time he calls someone or something "stupid", I'd have at least $100. His ego rivals Kanye West and Donald Trump. Most of the book is "this is why I am the best" "this is why I know more than you" "if they listened to me, they'd still be in business" "if you don't apply SCRUM you're stupid". Like dang, buddy, save some ego for the rest of us. The "SCRUM System" he developed genuinely seems like it's helpful and applying it to our everyday work will be beneficial, which is why I gave it 2 stars. But every chapter he says "I'll explain more about SCRUM later", which is annoying considering I was reading this book to learn about SCRUM, not about the all-mighty Sutherlands achievements. The process seems efficient, the writing is obnoxious. If he had written a 2 page manual about applying SCRUM, he would have accomplished twice the work in half the time...

Boring book, does not teach you anything about Scrum itself. Couple of methods here and there are thrown in there without giving further explanation, but the whole book is basically about how Jeff Sutherland is the man. Jeff created this, saves this company, helped this person the title of the book should just be called Biography of Jeff Sutherland. Also throwing in the book just bunch of random quotes and examples of other books and stories that were just Googled probably to add it to the book. The main point of the book could of been explained on 1 page. Waste of $20

Why did I choose this book? Its the premier book in scrum created by one of its founders. And it had fantastic reviews.Do NOT listen to people who say "it doesn't teach you how to implement scrum." yes it does. There is an appendix implantation guide at the end and the "why" and "how" all throughout the book.What was my experience reading the book? It was a very easy read. The voice of the book was pleasant and flowed well.It told of the history of scrum and how each role, each event, and each artifact developed and now what the best practices are.This book will get anyone up to speed on scrum.Would I recommend it to others? Of course, if they want to learn scrum, this is the bet place to start without a doubt.

The first thing to know is that this isn't a detailed guide to Scrum practices, though there is a summary of the key practices in an appendix. Since there are lots of guides to Scrum at the practices at varying levels of details, having more about what the practices are would not add a lot of value. This book does inform you about how scrum works by helping you to understand the value of Scrum through stories of Scrum in use in various domains, and not just software.. The book is full of war stories (both literally and figuratively), and Sutherland is clearly proud of how he, his family, and organizations he has worked with, have applied scrum. Reading this book will help energize you to use Scrum to help your team succeed. This is not the only book on Scum you need. But if you want motivation to explore more about Scrum, or if you have been practicing Scrum for a while and are looking for renewed inspiration, give this book a read.

Many Scrum books discuss the "how". This book focuses on the "why". I think it's very important to understand the "why" before trying to worry about the "how", so if you're new to Scrum and are thinking about diving straight into a book discussing the processes, I recommend taking a step back and reading something like this to understand where Scrum came from, what problems it is designed to solve, and how it is applicable to your situation, if at all.It gets a little over-ambitious towards the end, and tends to view Scrum as a silver bullet, which it is not, but the discussion in the first half of the book is great.

THE COLUMBIA BOOK OF CHINESE POETRY : From Early Times to the Thirteenth Century. Translated and Edited by BURTON WATSON. 385 pp. (Translations from the Oriental Classics). New York : Columbia University Press, 1984. ISBN 0-231-05682-6 (hbk.)Burton Watson has always struck me as an eminently civilized scholar and as a fine translator. Unlike certain others, he wears his scholarship lightly, and doesn't overburden the text with extraneous matter. His many translations from Chinese and Japanese Literature are of uniformly high quality, and are well worth having as they are books one often wants to returns to.The present anthology has always been one of my favorite books. In contrast to the more recent mammoth anthologies of Victor Mair (1335 pages) and John Minford (1176 pages), Watson's, at a mere 385 pages, is a far more modest and manageable proposition.Unlike the Mair and Minford, it can be held easily in the hand while reading, and it is printed in a large clear font on spacious pages in which the lines have room to breathe. Modest in size it is also modest in presentation. Selections are preceded by only the briefest of introductions, and footnotes have been kept to an absolute minimum.In his brief but extremely well-written and informative Introduction, Watson tells us that : "The present anthology is intended to give a representative selection of Chinese poetry in the 'shih' form from the first two thousand years of China's long literary history ... as well as outstanding works in the 'fu' and 'tz'u' forms and a few other works such as the 'Li Sao' or 'Encountering Sorrow' that are unique in form" (p.13).His book includes selections from 'The Book of Odes,' 'The Ch'u Tzu,' Early Songs, Poems in Rhyme-Prose Form, Poems of the Han and Wei, T'ao Yuan-ming, Wang Wei, Li Po, Tu Fu, Han Yu, Po Chu-i, Han Shan, Su T'ung-po, Lu Yu, and much else besides.Here, as an example of his superb style, is his translation of Liu Tsung-yuan's 'River Snow' (with my obliques added to indicate line breaks) :"From a thousand hills, bird flights have vanished; / on ten thousand paths, human traces wiped out : / lone boat, an old man in straw cape and hat, / fishing alone in the cold river snow" (p.282).The truth of Burton Watson's statement that the "Chinese poetic world is one that is remarkably easy to enter.... Even works that are many centuries removed from us in time come across with a freshness and immediacy that is often quite miraculous" (p.3) is very much in evidence here.Anyone who would like to get a good idea of what Chinese poetry is all about, and to actually enjoy the experience of finding out, should certainly consider the present anthology. Anthologies such as those of Mair and Minford are all very well in their way and can serve as useful references, but they are hardly books that one can sit down and read with pleasure from beginning to end.Watson's, however, is just such a book, and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who would like to begin exploring some of the richest and most interesting poetry in the world.

This is one of best translations of Chinese poetry I have read.Simple, direct and without adornment. Faithful to the originals.Another good book is the one by Whincup, but Whincup has only 57 poems.This one has over 300.

Currently about 30% through the book, so consider this an incomplete review. First, some non-spoiler-y things... Writing style is really solid. Dialogue is easy to follow and makes sense with the characters' styles. Nothing seems stilted or artificial. Even with the downsides that I'll list below, this is a solid read and I plan to finish it.Now, fair warning... ****** POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW ******If you're moderately well-versed in popular sci-fi of the last 10 years or so, let me toss out a couple of plot points for you to consider...* Aliens nearly wiped out humanity, then disappeared back to the depths of space.* Aliens have been absent for the last 75-ish years.* One of the last of the warships that humanity used in the first war is on its way to being decommissioned and turned into a museum-piece.* The captain was a bit of a troublemaker and is nearly the only one in the fleet preaching readiness instead of complacency.* The XO is the captain's best friend, and is an alcoholic.* Some people in humanity have 'sold out' and made a deal with the aliens.* The aliens are going back on their deal and have come to wipe out humanity.* There's a 'back door' in humans' new generation of starships that will allow the aliens to easily destroy all of them...except for the one retiring ship.Ummm...don't know about you guys, but I saw Battlestar Galactica too.

Hadn't read any of Nick Webb's books before but boy am I glad I finally gave Constitution a whirl. When the book gets going, its really never lets up. Nick Webb is a fantastic writer, and creates a blistering pace that flows so well. The action is solid, suspenseful and each chapter ends in ways that demand you keep reading. I found myself having to force myself to stop so I could do other things, like sleeping and eating! All in all this is a great, rock 'em sock 'em military sci-fi adventure and great start to the Legacy Fleet trilogy.There are a few reasons why I couldn't give this book a five-star review:1.) The Battlestar Galactica similarities are glaring, especially in the beginning. Even down to the titular ship about to be turned into a museum and being the one ship that can repel the Swarm when all newer vessels' tech is compromised. And let's not forget that Abe Haws, the main character's XO is basically Colonel Saul Tigh in everything but wife and name.2.) A small gripe, but the characters's physical descriptions were almost non-existent. Other than maybe Haws (who I just imagined as a bearded Col. Tigh), I really couldn't tell you want any other character looked like. Again, a personal gripe of mine but I like being able to visualize the characters through the writing and didn't feel I could do that here.3.) This was a big issue I've noticed in many futuristic sci-fi novels. The story takes place in the 27th century and there is like ZERO diversity among the main characters. Not really realistic at all given how diverse the US and other parts of the world are. We should have seen some Indian or Chinese characters in the main cast since in 2016 both countries combined equate 1/3 of Earth's population.4.) The threat to Earth was too focused on the US. The Swarm should have felt like a more global threat and not so US focused. Just saying.5.) The main character at times was stubborn to the point of stupidity in several instances, basically got a get out of jail free card for what should have been a terminal health issue at the end. I'm hoping that will be explained further in the next two books.Don't get me wrong, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. Those points just subtracted from what could have been one of the best sci-fi novels I've read this year. Looking forward to reading Warrior!

This is my first review. I don't normally review anything. But I bought this book and felt the need to comment because, well, it's really not very good. I'd like to comment constructively in case the author reads, I don't want to denigrate the effort that it took to write this book.In a nutshell, this book is Battlestar Galactica, as everyone else has commented. I mean, not just derivative, but like a direct copy of it. I'd go so far as to say it's plagiarism... I couldn't get past chapter 25, and I have always finished every book i ever start except for one. Why read this when I know exactly how the story goes?I mean, the basic narrative structure of all stories is very similar (check out Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey). So many stories share a similar plot STRUCTURE. But not the actual plot points. Changing the names of the characters but using the same plot is unoriginal at best. Here's a quick summary of all the points this story shares with BSG:1. Cantankerous old captain in outdated starship2. Grouchy alcoholic XO3. Old ship slated to be turned into a museum4. Alien battle almost destroyed earth 70 years ago5. aliens disappeared then, haven't been seen since6. A traitor to humanity gave them the backdoor to our current tech7. They use this backdoor to attack8. Outdated spaceship is only one immune to this attack9. this ship shepherds a civilian fleetI can't even bring myself to continue.This author also needs a bit of work and critique to up his game. The characters are flat, unchanging, and boring. The dialogue is stilted and unrealistic. The cast is shallow and monochromatic, and as other reviewers have pointed out, anglocentric, white-centric, us-centric. It's just not believable.In any case, it takes a lot to write something. I certainly haven't written a novel. There's a value to putting out work even if it's not great. I just wish I'd not spent the money on it. I hope the author can continue to write and continue to improve. But this feels like a student novel, not something a reputable publisher would put out.

This was a direct follow up to Mr. Leckie's Washington's War. It started off right after the American revolution and ends after the Mexican American war. Once again it is full of history, terms, and context you don't get reading the modern political party based history books. It is fair and unbiased in its description of events. Every American should read this and know their history. It really gives you perspective as to what is happening today. And with perspective maybe people will start acting rational again.

I liked this book so much when I first read it in the mid 1990's that I decided I wanted to have my own copy of it.It's a fine popular history of the early years of the United States of America, actually beginning in the first decade of the1800's before the young American Republic even went to war with Great Britain (again) in 1812.Mr. Leckie does an excellent job of capturing the 19th Century American spirit of "Manifest Destiny" which propelled our country both intothe West and onto the world stage. His descriptions of battles, including naval engagements and early amphibious operations, are enthralling.It gives the reader a good understanding of how and why our nation developed as it did.

I thought this was a fantastic book. I really loved it. I know a lot about the topics in this book because I've read them before. But it's so nice to have them all here in chronological order. What I really enjoyed is the exposition on all the characters in this book because of the detail in character description. I especially like the coverage of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War and the way Leckie gives details of the characters particularly Tecumseh and what a brave warrior he was and how he represented the courage and dignity of the Native Americans. I also like the description of the Mexican War as a dress rehearsal for the Civil War and the way the Mexican War led into the Civil War almost as if it was staged that way. In conclusion I would highly recommend this book to all students of American History.

This is one of L's better offerings. As always he is breezy and readable. strength is military history from the ground. L. takes the enlisted person's view. one would not know how highly Scott's Mexican campaign was valued by Wellington, for example, from this book. Taylor and Scott are known mainly by personality traits. L claims that Mexican War launched the American offensive tradition; enshrined might be better, but point is good. As always, L fills pages with his own religious prejudices. He can say nothing good about Calvinism (and I am an Anglican), but notes the virtues of Polk's mother, e.g. L likes to provide little biographies, often exercises in character assassination. Here they are useful, for they reveal the qualities of those who settled Texas, in short, the whole rural movement from the Appalachians to Missouri, traditions of rapacity, racism, violence, and crime. Many of those who died at the Alamo so that white Texans could own slaves were illegal immigrants. In a word, the pioneers were thugs. Although very conservative, L has no hesitation in portraying the wars against Indians and Mexico as cruel, unfair, and immoral. Good for him.

Very few books cover our nation's Manifest Destiny as well as this one does. Robert Leckie is at his absolute best.Starting at the end of the American Revolution and continuing through the close of the Mexican War, Leckie covers every aspect of our nation's territorial expansion. War with the Barbary Pirates, the War of 1812, the Louisiana Purchase, the impact of Texas Independence and its subsequent annexation are all covered in complete detail.Written in Leckie's straight forward, hurried, rushing style, this is a book that definitely will not disappoint. It is a pleasure to read and, if you are like me, it is a book you will enjoy more than once.
