'Two Scoops of Hooah!: The T-Wall Art of Kuwait and Iraq' by George Hauer with Robin Whitney is a collection of art on concrete barriers in combat zones.A t-wall, I learned, is a concrete barrier put in place as blast protection placed around military bases to protect from explosive blasts. As soldiers have been stationed near these, they have painted various murals on them. The t-walls are temporary. This book documents the various art left on them for a more permanent remembrance. Much of the art tells about the different units stationed near them. There are engineering companies, supply companies, medical units and various combat units. There is a section with art by coalition partners. The book finishes with memorial walls.It's a pretty straightforward book, and the art styles range. The poignancy is in the message stating "I was here" and it's not lost on me. I appreciate these men and women and the sacrifices they make. I really liked getting to see this form of art.I received a review copy of this ebook from Schiffer Publishing Ltd. and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. To be perfectly honest I kind of accidentally requested this book when I was checking the book on my iPad. But after I was granted access to this book did I think "What the heck it could be interesting."Even though I'm not a fan of war was it a bit interesting to see how soldiers decorated T-Walls. I had actually never heard of a T-Wall was before I read this book so now I have learned something new. The part I liked the best in the book was the memorial part when T-Walls was decorated after solders that had been killed. It was a heartwarming tribute to fallen comrades.Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

Napalm & Silly Putty Hardcover – April 24, 2001George Carlin is a hoot. I keep this around the coffee table. Many pick it up and look at it for a while, for a laugh. Sometimes it takes only a few moments and they laugh. Sometimes longer before they get the gist of what it is, they just got handed to them about a topic that is so obvious, after George would let you in on the humor of his mind's view of what he sees. I miss having him around. I hope he is well now, floating around the universe wise cracking on all that is out there.

Carlin fans will find most of the material in this book familiar as it is also seen in his stand-up (which is okay, most comedians do that).The nice things about the book is that its written in a variety of styles and in short sections...so it makes for an easy pick it up and read a bit anytime.(but that also means nothing may grab you to finish the entire book quickly) There are no real chapters nor table of contents and the subject matter changes frequently (even aside from the breaks of "short takes" which are much like his "Brain Droppings" one sentence observations)Some of the material is thought provoking, some of it is just silly. Some of it is just thrown out there to see what bites and move on. You will find yourself laughing aloud, especially when caught off guard by an absurd "short take".To appreciate the humor, I also found it helpful to really have Carlin's voice and delivery style in your head (watch a recent HBO special to get familiar with it). Without that definite "Carlin" rythm, you may miss the pure comedy to the writing.Overall, you will find this smart comedy and although some of it seems quickly assembled, it does contain purpose and thought.A word of warning: For those not familiar with Mr.Carlin, there is a fair share of obscene language, religious satire, and other possibly offensive subject matter. With that all said, enjoy!

I have been a HUGE Carlin fan since I was first introduced back in high school in 2003. My one regret in my life thus far is not seeing him live when I have 2 opportunities to do so.That being said, if you are a Carlin fan you must have this book. If you are a Carlin fan you must have Braindroppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops as well.I have read each book numerous times and when I read them I can hear his voice saying it outloud. A must have for any Carlin fan.

George Carlin is one of the few things my dad and I have in common (which gets him bonus points because my dad and I are as similar as night and day). Napalm and SIlly Putty essentially covers all areas of his ranting - religion, airline safety, the government, and others - with nothing really *new*. However, the rants themselves have been updated and redone to cover new areas of complaint.This probably isn't the best work he's done, but I think it's awesome nonetheless. I highly recommend it for any Carlin fan. However, if you have "Your Are All Diseased" on CD, it's nothing new, but it includes more things that aren't on the CD. Buy it to complete or start a collection and I think you'll be amused.

Napalm And Silly Putty is very similar to Brain Droppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops so my thoughts on it are similar to those books. It's hilarious, short, fun, and covers a massive variety of topics from politics to things that we all think about but never say. Carlin recycles some of his stand-up in this book but it is still fun to read and, unless you've seen all of his HBO specials multiple times like I have, you might not notice. Good for getting a laugh and for taking a break from novels that actually have a story.

Crude and rude kind of guy, quite self-centered and overly opinionated and narcissistic which perhaps is what one needs to be as a stand up comedian.

I bought this book for my husband, but he was disappointed. I guess the humor was too lame.

Carlin has been around for an awful long time and he is still a very funny man. He comes across like an philosopher except really angry and bitter about things in the world. However, because I identify with a lot of the things he says, he can not be far from reality.Some of the material in this book is from stand-up routines Carlin has done. Some of the stuff is really fresh. I really enjoyed Carlin's expose on the camcorder. Some people just don't know when to stop filming. How can people possibly watch all of thehome movies from their meaningless lives.I liked reading bits and peices of this book just to brighten up my day. It reads well this way. Overall, well worth the price!

I compare this to his other book (Brain Droppings), and get left with a bad taste in my mouth. I feel that Brain Droppings is probably 80% new material, whereas this book is maybe only 40% new material. Almost everything in it I had heard before. This disappointed me deeply. Not only that, but reading the book is much better, Carlin's book on cd was mostly kind of boring, as he did it much less emotionally than he does his live standup. If you read it, you can actually see him doing the standup in your head. So I do not recommend the cd version, go with the book, but only if you don't mind getting a rehash of older material.

However, I was positively surprised that compared to Peter Singer's 'The Most Good You Can Do', MacAskill's book is really full of new information and new ways of thinking about things.MacAskill breaks effective altruism down into five key questions and a few core topics. Each of them is illustrated with examples that are actually good to know. That's a key difference to 'The Most Good You Can Do'.For example, the chapter on ethical consumerism tells you which popular climate-saving measures are not really helping much (and which are) and the chapter on expected value helps you figure out which risks are worth taking, e.g. how bad it is to ride a motor bike compared to using ecstasy. The careers chapter contains some options I might actually try.All of this culminates into a pretty decent understanding of how to make a big difference.The book ultimately provides ways to get involved with the effective altruism movement.A read that's both entertaining and indispensable if you want to make a difference.

This is a superb introduction to effective altruism. Doing Good Better is an excellent introduction to effective altruism.As a 78 year old codger, I've spent the almost five years since my wife's death mourning and then selling off real estate and other assets to simplify my life, being sure my family's and my own needs are met, and devoting the balance to charitable giving -- something my wife and I agreed on throughout her long illness -- we had plenty of discussions about the matter. Doing Good Better is superb at introducing some basic concepts. So far I've worked out a three step program to determine my own "effectiveness", using four different charitable organizations as training wheels. I plan to take a long ocean trip next January to decide on how to proceed on this life journey next year and for as long thereafter as possible.Step one -- raise money with the goal of obtaining additional funds from others. For example, issue a one for one challenge grant -- for each dollar you donate, I will match with one dollar. Financial ratio: 1.0 -- your funds divided by my funds donated, both of us to the same charity (although I am going to experiment with a criss/cross, where you donate to my charity and I donate to your charity). So far, in 18 projects, my financial ratio has ranged from a negative 1.0 to an average of 6.4 -- trending higher as I gain experience.Step two -- take into account my time invested. Compare time invested with financial return ratio. It takes almost no time to subscribe to Amazon's great Smile program which matches my purchases with a donation of 0.5% from Amazon at no cost to me. Small potatoes, sure, but a great financial return -- infinite really -- with only ten minutes invested. And, talking the program up with others. So far, $38 donated this year to the Trail Conference. Obviously, bigger returns are worth more investment of time; but small returns with big investment of time is not so good, unless there are other factors in play.Step three -- rate each project on intangibles from 1 to 5 stars. Doing Good Better is a great introduction to effective altruism and the sort of rational, evidence-based reasoning that is extremely helpful to making sure that what we do in our lives actually effectively fulfills our values.Without explicitly asking ourselves MacAskill's Second Key Question of Effective Altruism, "Is this the most effective thing you can do?" we may end up having a "merely very good" impact with our lives, which surprisingly is nowhere near as good as the best impact we potentially could have.As MacAskill writes, "When it comes to doing good, fat-tailed distributions seem to be everywhere. It’s not always true that exactly 80 percent of the value comes from the top 20 percent of activities—sometimes things are even more extreme than that, and sometimes less. But the general rule that most of the value generated comes from the very best activities is very common" (p. 50).If we don't consciously try to achieve the most good we can and purse that challenge with careful reasoning, then it's likely we won't achieve anywhere near our potential. That's why effective altruism is important and why I was very happy to learn that there is a growing community of people who agree about the importance of this sort of thinking.

Many of us take part in the United Way, whose catalog shows each charity's administrative costs, an indicator of how much of our gift actually goes to those in need. However, MacAskill's book goes far beyond a simple percentage to provide us a method for evaluating charitable foundations' effectiveness, identify those focused on the most serious needs and whose interventions are uniquely powerful and unduplicated by other groups.
