The book contains some interesting premises most notably that rural (redneck) America may not be as homophobic as people think. Unfortunately, the book is way too long and repetitive. If could have made a great article for The New Yorker.

Extremely well researched, with many valuable insights. Very dense in style, almost but not quite crossing the line into sociological jargon.

"Rednecks" is musical history that tells the story of the cultural creation of the powerful American middle class (the "narrating" class) using the concept of taste, detailing how although the middle class has become musically omnivorous of late, distaste for country music in particular defines this cultural group against its nemesis-reflection-- the white working class. Hubbs describes how the latter group, lacking the power of narration, has been characterized in the dominant image as a bigoted, ignorant mass dumbly voting against its own economic interests due to an unhealthy obsession with conservative social exclusionary causes including racism, sexism and homophobia. She explores country music lyrics, presenting a great deal of evidence suggesting that working class America is not inherently homophobic, but that as middle class cultural taste has changed to include formal acceptance of homosexuality, this process has included pinning homophobic ideas on the working class. This insight may be shocking to middle class readers who with the best of intentions have likely absorbed many of these social constructions as truths, thinking of mobs of ignorant working-class Americans as the "problem" with America, the ones voting Republican, the group maintaining all types of blind bigotry, while enlightened and educated middle class members appreciate all the world's cultural forms except country music, of course, and the lead good fight against bigotry in any form. Hubbs destroys this image of the heroic middle class, not only by pointing out how mythological the stereotypes are, but also showing just how the narrating class maintains systemic bigotry while scapegoating voiceless groups. As if that weren't enough rich history and hegemony-busting insight, Hubbs also takes the reader through a fascinating class-based and musical history of being queer in America. If you are interested (and how could you not be?) in music history, the formation of the social classes in the U.S., the way dominant cultural narratives are formed and maintained, and/or the histor(ies) of queer America, told through class- and race-based lenses, you will find this book a fascinating read. Although it is an academic book, non-academic readers will find its broad insights and dense knowledge presented in an accessible, enjoyable manner.

Allistair Horne has taken no pains in his classic study of the French conflict in Algeria from 1954-62. Horne takes the reader into the thought processes of the civilian leaders in Paris and the French military leaders as well as the various Algerian groups that vied for influence. Both groups often had very different ideas and conceptions of what was best for Algeria and France’s future role in it. Often times, it wasn’t just a two sided conflict between France and Algeria, but rather had three, four, five or even more sides because of the complicated relations between civilian and military leaders in France and moderates and extremists among the rebels.This work has experienced something of a renaissance given the United States wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Certainly, there are commonalities such as a pride or arrogance born out of great power status or lacking a fundamental understanding of who the adversary is and what they wanted. One could maybe even note a division between civilian and military leadership although the divide in France was much deeper.Allistar Horne illustrates that when you combine an arrogance about your place in the world with a fundamental misperception of your enemy coupled with numerous divisions on both sides of a conflict, you get a toxic soup that leads to bloodbath and innocent people being shot down in the streets when both sides had opportunities to come to a far more noble solution. Sad, yet important reading for anyone interested in conflict studies.

Alistair Horne's brilliant history of the Algerian War is one of the best books of its kind ever written. And this updated edition is particularly well-packaged and attractive to the modern reader for whom the Algerian War might otherwise be a mere asterisk on the bloody history of mid-twentieth century anti-colonial wars. The cover blurbs on this edition suggest it should have been read by planners prior to the US war in Iraq. Not sure I agree since the Iraq War was no colonial war but a straight up invasion and occupation of a country deemed belligerent to US interests. What made Algeria so unique was the 130 years of back-story in which Algeria was adopted as "an integral part of Metropolitan France." It was a marriage that went sour and the ensuing war pitted brother against brother. Many decorated French Muslim national war heroes fought on both sides; patriotic pied noir Algerians fought both the FLN/Muslims and French government simultaneously; and some of France's greatest military leaders turned on their civilian masters in Paris in order to "save the army," "save French Algeria" and/or "save the Republic." There was nothing quite like it. Some people are dissatisfied with this book because it's "Eurocentric" or "biased against France." This is all nonsense. Horne wrote with the resources available to him. Independent Algeria and it's original "external" leaders were not cooperative sources. Nor were the many French military and civil leaders for whom the war meant humiliation and shame. Horne's approach is as balanced as possible considering his post-conflict sources. Once I reached the events of May 1958, I began reading Larteguy's "The Praetorians" simultaneously with this book. It helped put it all together in a dramatic way. If you have the time and energy, I recommend the same exercise. What most historians miss, although Horne gives all the evidence here, is that the FLN insurrection was nothing more than the resurgence of latent Islamic Jihad against the West -- under the guise of Marxist, Anti-Colonial Nationalism. The FLN took the long view of the war as a continuation of a long struggle against "Christian" Europe. Marxism empowered the non-existent Algerian people to think in terms of a war of national liberation. But Algeria was an artificial construct of the occupying French. It's people were not Algerian but European, Arab or Kabyle (Berber). It was a mixture that French nationalism and culture could never keep together. Today's pan-Islamic radicalism ignores the barriers of nationalism erected around the Muslim world by the Western Powers after the defeat of the Ottomans. In this idea, A Savage War of Peace is a tremendous memoir of the failure of colonialism to "civilize" the Muslim world with European national culture. For this very reason I heartily recommend this book to everyone who wants to understand the resurgence of jihad and Islamic insurrection in the 21st Century.

A book from a good historian writer. Sometimes has the British tendency to pick on the French while forgetting that the Brits were just as bad, or sometimes worse, colonists. Nevertheless the author relies on chronological facts in an excellent way for this last struggle of France's attempt to preserve a colony. I was there in Great Kabylia, conscripted two and half years in the marines, during the later part of the war. We rebelled in vain against De Gaulle and his mignons imposing stupid edicts towards the native population.

I will resist adding to the praise for this masterpiece, but will offer 2 bits of advice to modern readers of the paperback edition below.The focus of this huge book is on the conflict and only hints a other factors in the French calculations like the possible delay of Algeria's release until after the French no longer needed their desert to test and refine their first nuclear weapons, making them a "major power".advice:[1] If you studied a language other than French in High School or College, it can be useful to get access to a reference for french phrases. The book was written in the 1970s in England when apparently "everyone" was conversationally fluent in French. (Google Translate can only give a literal translation of the words, not the connotation of the phrase.) Good translations of what these phrases mean in a spoken setting can add to a fuller understanding of the narrative.[2] A map of Algeria can be useful if you have the paperback edition. It was printed with a 2-page map that presumably was fully rendered in a hard cover version, but is missing the inner borders in the paperback, thus leaving a reader wondering if anything is missing. (Nothing important is, as it turns out, but until you check another reference, one won't be sure ...)

This was not helpful at all, and will not help you get a good grade in legal writing. Most of it is common-sense.2 stars because it's decently priced, but skip this one.

Since I was looking foreward to the actual thermonuclear tests done on Bikini, as opposed to the terrible treatment of the Bikinians by our govenment, this book was extremely boring to me. The actual pre-tesing, the test and the resulting fall out was not covered enough for me. This could have been done much better if more actual details of the testing were covered.

The native population on Rongelap were in close proximity and downwind of a 15-megaton H-bomb test. Jane Dibblin provides an investigative reporter's account of the devestating impact on the islanders.

I have to get if two stars for the following reason. This problem is important enough that buyers should know about it.The book is spiral bound, and that's great, but here's the deal: instead of the holes being drilled, they were punched. The force/ pressure causes the spiral edge of the pages to be stuck together (defeated the purpose of the spiral binding). When attempts are made to separate the pages, the result is tearing, sometimes a little, but often so much that the whole spiral edge comes loose and the page is left hanging on my a thread.I returned the first copy for this reason, but the second suffered from the same problem as well.

Content is good, but the printing job regarding the pages sticking together is as other reviews said not good. The pages sticking together and tearing even when trying to carefully and slowly open them is unacceptable. The 2014 version (which was printed in the USA) opened fine with no stuck pages, but the 2016 update version (printed in China) had many pages stuck together. Make sure you get the correct version with the 2016 update. I ordered two (2) Pocket Style Manuals with the 2016 MLA Update Edition. I received one (1) Pocket Style Manual with the 2016 MLA Update with the correct ISBN number 978-1-319-08352-6, and I received one (1) Pocket Style Manual without the 2016 MLA Update with ISBN number 978-1-4576-4232-6 (the 2014 version, which is why I was able to compare the printing quality). If you use the MLA citation method for papers, the old 2014 version will not have the new MLA website citation format so make sure your copy has the orange circle on the front cover that says "2016 MLA Update."

While the information is good, the pages did not open well on the spiral. In trying to separate pages many of them tore, even though I was trying to do it as gently as possible. I have only had the book a short time and several of the pages are now falling out.

This book was required for my ENG 101 class at college, and the information inside was very helpful when I had to do my essays. It showed me how to cite my research in the papers. I still keep it handy when I need to write some essays for school to make sure I have used the proper format. I'm an international student and I recommend it to anyone who speaks English as a second language.

The low rating is cosmetic--nothing to do with content. The front and back covers were damaged. The pages were stuck together by the spiral edge and have already torn a bit just trying to turn the pages. Very poor quality for the price.

I'm used to writing in APA style but for one of my majors the majority of the classes require MLA. This is easy to keep with me when I travel so I can double check my papers before I submit them. Well worth the purchase.

This book contains great information about the MLA update and is neatly organized! Great to have in your backpack to remind you of the rules for MLA.

Fantastic resource, whether you are writing a PhD thesis (I am) or starting off in college (used it then too). I learned more about grammar and writing from this book than I did in many English classes. A must have!

I loved the first set of books in this series of books and wondered if I'd love Dani as a lead character as much as I loved Bryn in that role. I shouldn't have - Ms Chase has created full, wonderful worlds populated with a terrific ensemble of characters and I enjoyed Dani's first book tremendously. We're privy to a bit more background regarding her grandmother's magic addiction [though I hope for more, in terms of how does a magical addiction manifest itself and what event/s brought such shame to the family] and we start to understand Dani's quest to be the best yet always in control. Love the new characters introduced and, as one reviewer mentioned, it's refreshing to have the male love interests be an integral part of the plot, making valuable contributions rather than always saving the day. Not to mention the fact that they're strong individuals, ones that don't always agree with the girl. Finally I think the author's best move was to truly include/involve the other characters from the first set of books - not only can we keep up with them but it fully immerses us in this world she's created.

I really liked Dani, she’s a talented overachiever with too much confidence.Really, that should make me hate her, I don’t though, since it’s obvious there’s a frightened girl inside, scared to death of failing and being mediocre.She’s got a soft spot for Peter, the halfdruid, her complete opposite in everything except loyalty.I loved the story, the only thing I missed a bit, were the other girls, Bryn was in the story from time to time, and I’d hoped to see more of Cerys and Mia, get to know them a little bit better.She’s good at sneaking in Harry Potter references, which is a plus for me, since I love Harry Potter.

It was really interesting to see a book from Dani’s perspective. I thought she was interesting in Bryan’s series so it was cool to see her in more detail. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!

This series has it all - adventure, fantasy, romance, danger, and magic. It is hard to put down. I recommend it.

I bought this book to learn some of my faviorite gospel tunes. All of the songs were very easy to learn. The tab is pretty standard and does not have anything tricky. There are just slides and pull-offs. The book provides tab and what looks to be piano music which are both on the same page. This made it difficult to follow along with at first but once you memorize the song it is fine. If you like good old time songs of the faith and love to play America's national instrument this book is for you. Happy pickin'!

My mother in law loves it... she plays piano as well... it has tablatry and chords that makes it used with variety of instruments. It was a great purchase.

I had mine spiral bound for $1.49 at Staples which allows it to lay flat for easier following on a music stand or table. You will wear out this book with these popular hymns. Keep apickin'.

This book has some good songs in it, but they are not the most exciting versions possible. I thought they all sounded alike. I am just a begginer but I feel I could make up better versions myself by ear just flying by the seat of my pants. Maybe it is assumed that you have a pocket full of hot licks and tricks to jazz things up, but since I'm not very good yet I was hoping to get some cool ideas for playing hymns from this book. If you want basic versions of each song this is a great book. I also wish the tabs were on the lines, not in between.

I purchased this book, hoping for halfway easy to follow tabs. I also wanted to learn some music that I can play at church. The tabs in this book are really easy to follow. The melody sheets help you to learn how the song goes, than throw in the tablature, and it works out beautifully. With the notation, my sister can easily convert it to fiddle music. I'm going to have to do like that other person and have mine spiral bound. Great idea. Too bad music books don't all come that way. Great price, great songs. You won't be disappointed.
