Penzler Pick, August 2001: Two years ago, I wrote a book titled 101 Greatest Films of Mystery and Suspense. In addition to watching every one of those movies again (not exactly a horrendous ordeal), I did tons of research, flipping through or reading more than a hundred books about film. The best book--the one with the most offbeat stories and anecdotes, the most accurate information, and the most entertainingly written--was Dark City by Eddie Muller. It was a fascinating study of the great films noir, and a page didn't go by without my learning something. Now Muller is back with Dark City Dames. It's a very different kind of book, not offering the big-picture overview that Dark City did, but it's nearly as fascinating. It's a portrait of six of the greatest femme fatales of the wonderful black-and-white crime movies that filled the screens in the 1940s and '50s: Jane Greer (the star, with Robert Mitchum, of Out of the Past and The Big Steal), Marie Windsor (The Killing, The Narrow Margin), Ann Savage (Detour), Evelyn Keyes (The Prowler, Johnny O'Clock), Audrey Totter (The Lady in the Lake, The Unsuspected), and Coleen Gray (The Sleeping City, Kiss of Death, Nightmare Alley). But these aren't rehashes of plots and quotes from the rave reviews of these stars. Muller personally interviewed each of them, and the second half of the book is a kind of "Where are they now?" Perhaps oddly--perhaps not--these wicked, lying, cheating, double-crossing, money-hungry temptresses of the screen turn out to be rather nice ladies, as normal as one could expect of beautiful movie stars, and Muller brings them fully to life. There are regrets here, both on the part of the reader and of Muller, that space couldn't be devoted to many of the biggest female stars of film noir. There's no Barbara Stanwyck, or Gloria Grahame, or Veronica Lake, or Lisabeth Scott, or Claire Trevor, or Ida Lupino. Scott became a silent recluse, and the others had died. Another superb piece of interesting information delivered through poetic prose from the aptly-anointed Czar of Noir, Eddie Muller. This time he profiles the then and now of six essential women synonymous to Film Noir. I enjoyed this almost as much as his earlier masterpiece titled "Dark City - The Lost World of Film Noir."I've read just about everything published on this subject and can honestly say nobody does it better than Muller. Buy this book and while your at it, throw "Dark City" into your cart along with it... you'll thank me for it later.

"Dark City Dames": The Wicked Women of Film Noir is a fascinating book about some extraordinary screen actresses from the "good old days" of Hollywood. Eddie Muller's unique work is definitely not the typical coffee table volume composed for Hollywood nostalgia addicts. His superbly researched profiles of six noted actresses from the film noir genre; Coleen Gray, Jane Greer, Evelyn Keyes, Ann Savage, Audrey Totter and Marie Windsor, create real life drama from the femme fatale images of the past. Mr. Muller cleverly organized his book with two chapters for each actress, past and present. In every instance, all of the profiled women freely share their triumphs and disappointments, their loves and heartbreaks. While many of the insider stories and tidbits offered by Mr. Muller will amuse and titillate the reader, it is the admirable spirit, determination and character of these women that truly touched my heart. A case in point was the late Marie Windsor, a prime example of a unique talent who never realized her supernova screen potential. Toward the end of her life, Miss Windsor was desperately ill, taking care of a sicker husband, supporting a stepson, managing a household and holding down an important position with the Screen Actors Guild. Through it all, she remained determined to perservere and was ever grateful for a good life fully lived. Mr. Muller adroitly weaves the central themes of film noir, Hollywood and the studio system through the book, but the actresses and their fascinating personal lives earn the deserved star billing. "Dark City Dames" is a must for the film noir buff, but is a terrific book for anyone who enjoys the indomitability and compassion of the human spirit. They don't make movies like they used to, because they don't have actresses like these six around anymore.

We absolutely love this book! It arrived right on time, in perfect shape. This was a birthday present, and I was so pleased with the shape of the book. Each chapter has a little newspaper clipping in front telling about the star of that chapter. I can't stress how much we love this book. The stories about each star really gives you a complete view of their life.

It's not fair for me to review this book, as the author, Eddie Muller, is a friend of mine. I can say that, at the time it was written, the women profiled were still alive and interviewed by Eddie. I can't swear to that because I haven't even read the book yet. But it's out of print so I grabbed it as soon as I saw it for offer. It's a great companion to DARK CITY, by the same author and a definitive work on Hollywood in the 50s and 60s.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Very entertaining and compassionate exploration into the lives of these incredible actresses.

This looks cool, but it's actually a Christmas gift for my sun who is into film Nour, so I'll have to wait til after he reads it to know how good it is.

What a great book for the "film noire" buff. I've seen the author onTCM and I have his other book on the same subject.

Quite disappointed. I bought this CA map book to replace the much more desirable older version. Delorme decided to format this new map book for the entire state of California instead of splitting the state into two separate books like before. I knew right away I didn't like this new version, but at first thought it was because of the new "3D topography style". Too busy. But then I opened the old version right next to the new version. Instead of doubling the number of pages for the whole state version, DELORME SHRUNK THE MAP RATIO TO HALF THE SIZE TO SAVE PAPER COSTS!! When off-roading, one needs a nice tight government "topo" type map size. This new map book is just going to sit on my home's book shelf, while my beat up old version will still stay in the Jeep. What good does it do for an "off road" explorer, camper, or hunter to have an over-detailed and unclear map of the approximately 100 miles of the distance from San Bernardino to way past Palm Springs on one page opening, when what he needs is good, clear uncluttered map of the 20 miles around him? I am very disappointed.

Delorme used to get 5 stars because of their hi quality and durable saddle-stitch topo map books. I am giving them 2 stars now for this sub-par perfect-bound new California book. The maps are ok - I knew they would cover more area per page than the old 1990s era Southern California book that I threw away before I got this new one. The maps are just as good as before, just a different scale. If it weren’t for that I’d give this ONE star because of the bindery. Only two uses during small one-day excursions this summer and during my second, you can see what happened in the photos. All the pages I was using just fell out after I opened the book to use them. I didn’t fold it back or anything abusive - in fact I was careful. Unfortunately this happened AFTER the Amazon return window. Hence this review. I wish I’d never thrown out that old book. After 20 years repeated use, more pages were still intact than this book with just 2 uses in 2 months. Delorme, if you read this, do the right thing and send me a refund.

I've had the old north & south CA. for years, they were great & saved me so many times. I carried them everywhere until they finally gave out. Hard to believe they didn't upgrade and reprint. This looks like the old info. on a smaller scale and harder to use. It's better than nothing but not what it was by any stretch. Maybe if we all bug them........GPS is great but there's nothing better than scanning a nice large page to see the lay of the land....and roads.....and trails.

I used to use delorme gazetteers for any state I was going to. So, recently we went to Yosemite and sequoia NP. I purchased the CA gazetteer and it was a huge pain in the butt to use. Good for big picture, bad for details.

Heads up it's an atlas and thus atlas-sized, i.e. huge. I was expecting something more portable. However it appears to be quite definitive and I look forward to exploring the incredibly detailed pages. Not exactly practical for in the field but good for home study. If it was more handy I would give 5 stars. The reason size matters here is that this is a book intended for someone to use on the go or in an emergency maybe.

If you're a map person, as I am, this is a must have. My ONLY reservation is that it's unclear how dated the maps are? It says Fourth Edition 2015, but does that mean the maps were revised at that point? They need to make that clear. Overall, however, this is a must have if you like traveling the back roads and seeking out forgotten corners of the state.

OK mapGood for those who keep to the roadside services.Campgrounds are limited to the RV and resort types.

I like this book because it has great maps of roads and back roads. It is not like google maps, no instructions but this will be used in the event the grid goes down and we need to get around to new locations and need an easy way to see where we need to go. The roads are labeled easily enough to read. The book is large. My son loves maps too so he enjoys just following the roads.

It will take you more time to set up your Amazon publishing account than it will take to upload and publish your ebook. I bought this for my 12 year old niece. She loves the shoujo style, clamp-esque type anime art (so does auntie for that matter!) and she's just learning to draw and for 12 is showing a real talent for it, so I've been wanting to help and encourage it now while she's so young. As an artist myself, I've been teaching her and this book was wonderful for demonstrating the different emotions you can do with a face with minimal lines and strokes. Out of all the myriad of books I've bought for her (How to Draw Manga, Manga for Dummies, etc...) this so far has been her absolute favorite. I flipped through it and gave it a good look over before I gave it to her and as a tool and guide for beginners I give it 5 stars. It's small, it's convenient, and for kids/beginners handy as heck. The only disadvantage, because of it's size, unless you break the spine, it will not lay open for reference while someone is drawing. But that is minor and not worth losing a star over. I doubt a 12 year old will even notice that little detail, she loved it just as is. :)

My original thoughts on this book were that that it would be a handy reference guide to drawing expressions and moods. I was surprised at how short it was, and how little information or details there really are. It would make a nice coffee table book, or a quick reference guide if you wanted to draw exactly what they had in the book. It only contains female faces, from a front facing angle, and only has a few expressions typed under it. The printed text I did not find helpful, but the small portraits may be useful if you're stuck on how to express an emotion. There are no instructions or tips on how to create those looks, however.My copy is the Kindle version, and I am glad for that, as the price point is more in line with the quality and content of the book. It is incredibly short, and not very useful unless you just want some cute ideas to go on. One thing to note is that the Kindle Edition is best read on a tablet, or a device that allows for better zooming and full color. It does not display very well on the Kindle W/Keyboard or the Kindle Touch and loses some of its impact because the grays are very faint. Zooming in is necessary to really get the most out of the expressions.Who this book is best for: Anyone who wants a pocket guide for basic manga expressions, beginners wanting to see how emotions look on characters, those who want a book for inspiration on characters.

This is a very nice compilation of expressions. I bought it as a reference guide for quick comic expressions, it's just about perfect for that. If you're hoping to do the same, this book assumes the reader is already proficient in the fundamentals of character design and construction. The expressions are presented in full color by means of simple, clean head and upper torso illustrations. At first glance, the book seems to duplicate several expressions, but upon close examination, the body language differed, and the subtleties should become obvious. This could, I think, have been more clearly expressed if the similar illustrations were done full length body, but then, if you read manga astutely, or have consciously noted human body language, you should be able to extrapolate an appropriate pose from the head-and-torso examples within and all will be clear. For what it attempts to convey, (facial expressions of anime characters) it's unrivaled (as of 2/2012). It's extremely helpful to have all of the expressions one place, and, in addition to books like Facial Expressions: A Visual Reference for Artists, you'll have a very nice reference toolkit for tackling facial expressions for most any kind of character illustration you can think up. As a bonus, the book's illustrations are accompanied by relative verbal expressions in both Japanese (romanji), and English.Pros:Comprehensive straight-on and 3/4 view head-&-shoulders mange expressionsClean, concise layout, with well drawn contemporary styled characters (as of 2/2012)Includes brief verbal expressions, statements, questions and ripostes relevant to the accompanying illustrationsCons:A few of the emotions would have been more clearly defined accompanied by full-body thumbnailsThe book could be physically bigger - it's about 4.5" (13cm) squareBottom Line:If you're an artist interested in adding some emotions to your bag of tricks, pull the trigger, this book will easily pay for itself in time spent digging through comics looking for expression examples.

I don't think I need to state it but it's for reference. It's really really cute (and girly. only anime girls that are like 13 in here :l) and I like how it's pocket-sized,but I think 8.99 is expensive. There are expressions that look the same (but they are cute) and in my opinion the expressions look... sort of incorrect. There isn't a lot written in there, it teaches you Japanese but I'd rather learn it in a different way. Keep in mind that this is a gift book. It is pleasant though. I LOVE it but it is expensive. Also, the hairstyle, face, and clothing are sort of the same... The clothing is basically just scarves and something on top of something (It was ok), the faces are the same except for the emotions, and the hair are ALL short, goes the same way, has those little curved up hair on top except different colors. Even with the cons, I still LOVE it. I can't wait to get the 2nd one.Pros Super super cute Super super super cute Super cute drawings Beautiful+Cute colors+coloring and shadingCons Expensive Not much (at least not much for the price.
